$499 and 599 depending on options. Need to buy HD cable for another $59, and games for $59 each.

    Wow.

Gran Turismo 5 will have to be awfully good for me to go out and buy a video game for that much money. GT4 was the only reason why I bought a PS2.

Yeah, but they seem to have learned nothing from 6 years ago when the last Playstation came out. That whole thing was a mess as well. If anyone should have known what kind of inventory/supply situation they were facing, it would be Sony. These people have several decades of global distribution experience behind them, so this "shortage" just strikes me as odd.

As of late Sony strikes me as the company who can't shoot straight. Exploding laptop batteries, compact discs containing viruses (virii?) and now this.

Oh and that's another thing. Exactly how many format wars has Sony won anyway? Betamax = history, Minidisc = history, UMD = not likely to succeed and Blu-Ray = who knows? Probably another lost format as well. Have I missed any?

I think several companies have already backed away from the UMD format, too.

A friend of mine got one (60Gig) this morning just as the shipment was being unpacked. Target had 6, three were spoken for within a minute.

MicroMV = Sony's proprietary alternative to MiniDV, but of course it flopped. Probably others too.

I disagree with the folks that say Sony is building mystique with short supply. I think it does not benefit them one bit do to this, and I think mystique/allure in a game console means nothing. It was hyped to death for years before release, and now that it's out, it's good but not fantastic - certainly doesn't live up to the hype.

The reason they have not released more is simply a manufacturing issue. They pushed real hard to get it out now. They are shipping them air freight - which is HUGELY expensive for a manufacturer. If the market timing was not an issue, the PS3 would be released next spring or summer. It was pushed out before the tech was really ready for prime time (meaning yields on the blue lasers used in the bluray player). They simply cannot make them in enough quantities. It's not as simple as opening more production lines - if the most exacting procedures must be followed and even that leads to low yields, then rushing alternate lines will provide no benefit, and rather a detriment.

Sony just screwed the pooch with the PS3. They really should have ditched built-in Bluray and went with a DVD and a bluray add-on a-la XBOX360. Nobody really cares all that much about bluray - certainly not as much as Sony (apparently) cares, and they tripped over their own feet on this one.

I'm not even going to bother looking for a PS3 until sometime next year. Eventually they will be in different colors (silver and I think white) so its something else to look forward to. Plus there will be a lot more games then there is now. I cant wait for Oblivion and Assasins Creed.

It works great. The PS3 just came in today. I was just using the controller to select letters, which was just like text messaging on a cell phone, but you can also use a USB keyboard and mouse. I will get a screenshot up in a bit.

P.S. This post was made back on the 'puter.

Here is just quick shot of the browser on Fchat. I'm not sure how to grab a screanshot from my PS3 yet, so I had to just take a pic of the TV. It really a great brower. All the funtions are hidden.

Aside from the whole movie aspect of blue-ray. it stores a few gigs more than hd. a few gigs is a lot of room when working with games, so long as the hardware's up to the task.

I think the catch though is that so few games are that big (what game couldn't be compressed into the 4+ gigs on a DVD or if necessary use 2 DVDs), and the double-edged sword about size is that as games become so massive they take more time to make and are exponentially more expensive. One of my concerns is the lack of quantity that cost brings. The result of only getting 80 games per year on a system is that there are usually only 5-6 out of those I'm interested in playing.

I went to Wal-Mart and they had one there I was playing with. Pretty un-impressed with it. So far, I'm not justifying the cost at all, but I didn't get into everything either, like the web browser, bla bla bla...

I'll stick to my PS2 for now.

The local best buy got 38 in today. I think shipments like this will be happening every week...
