What kind of rolex is that? I don't know whether the case is designed for depth or whether it is a precursor to a corum bubble. Very sharp either way and I don't wear a casio or seiko but a breitling colt automatic I got for my 16th birthday a few years back ;) I can post pics if you want lol, but they can't compare to yours. Later

It's a prototype diver's watch that was fixed to the outside of Auguste Piccard's deep sea diving submarine, the bathyscaph "Trieste." It proved itself at a record depth of 10,335 feet (3150 meters) in 1953. Waterproof up to seven miles and capable of withstanding pressure at seven tons per square inch.

Obviously, the appeal to my tastes occur with the domed bubble crystal and enormous 57mm length. Purely prototypical, approximately less than seven in existence.

Yes pls share your watch here with all of us...any brand and model...this thread is about all watches....except fakes !

That Rolex is amazing. Owning that many watches would present way too many problems for me, like which one to wear. ;) What a great collection.

Thanks....I love it coz it's funky looking and very un-Rolex in terms of design as compared to their regular range of sports watches.

Well...there's a trick though....I categorise some as "safe queens" and the others I rotate them like a different watch every day..and also depending on occasions. I'm glad you've enjoyed my humble collection : )

TMJ very interesting rolex, and cool story. Here is a picture of my Colt or should I say scan as I don't have a digital cam but I have a scanner. Also, attached is a scan of my NOA 1675 forgive the quality lol. while nothing like your watches my father does have a few of his own and he kind of got me interested. He has an IWC portugiese schaufen(sp) white dial with two white sub dials, two tone submariner blue dial, stainless datejust, and his prize jewel of his collection a gold panerai with a carbon fibre face I believe only 300 were made he got it from tournou(sp) in palm beach a couple years ago. Watches are pretty neat things, but I have way to much to learn about them :)

Hey Erik...thanks for sharing your watch with us here...I really appreciate the effort on your part to post even though you are handicapped with a scanner instead of a digicam right now.....Kudos to you Erik....and I'm sure you'll be taking over those beautiful pcs from your dad in future : ) You reminded me of myself many yrs back. I started with a humble watch...when I was still in college...got my first Rolex...a stainless-steel manual winding one....though nothing to shout about as it's the most basic model....but I saved real hard for it while I was still schooling ! When I started work I bought my first steel-gold Rolex at age 22...and it felt good as I thought hey....it's great to be rewarded when u work hard...and when I hit 23, bought my first AP Royal Oak in S/S...boy that's one watch I really love...simple elegance. At age 25...bought my first Patek Philipe...Damn...got hooked by PP.... as it's the best of the best... and I simply love it's understated looks. Within 2 days after my first PP....bought the second one in white gold...yes same model but of different gold colour...first one was pink gold, second one in white...Oh well...and the rest they said was history.....

A Rolex Deep Sea Special prototype is an extraordinary find and watch to have in any collection.

I did notice that your pics are the same ones as in this article...

Thanks for appeciating it like myself....there's a story to getting that watch...I attended an earlier auction...yes..they were auctioning an earlier pc....but I tell you...back then...didn't have so much ammunition ( $$$ )...and guess who bought that one...ans = Rolex Geneva ! Yes....Rolex bought that pc for their own collection...Aaaarrrggghhhh...I was kicking myself for not having so much cash back then....but when the next pc came up for auction....guess what I got.....look at pc of the caseback with serial no 1 ( one )

    Deep Sea Special….the facts...

Following the sale of the Deep Sea Special at the Christies, Geneva auction on 14th November 2005 and subsequent posts in this forum, a comment was made by Mr Rolex suggesting that the watch was not an original Deep Sea Special as described by the auctioneers, but one of 35 replicas.

Having personally inspected this watch myself at the auction preview, I was a little surprised at the comments made, as the watch appeared identical to the watch sold several years earlier by Christies in London and reportedly purchased by Rolex.
The key similarity being the style and layout of the case back.
I did not post anything, as I felt I would be better placed to comment after conducting some research.

All of the information provided below is available to the public, via museums & auction databases; it does not contain anything that is deemed confidential.
Further data supporting the facts is also available but it cannot be shared without permission (I have not included this information).

IMO, there is absolutely no doubt that the watch sold by Christies, Geneva on 14/11/2005 to a UK dealer on behalf of a client is, No.1 of the original batch of Deep Sea Specials made by Rolex

There may possibly be 3 series/variations of these in total.

Given both the historical importance of this piece and its monetary value, It may have been IMO unwise and unprofessional for a respected dealer and influential figure to make dismissive and potentially damaging comments, when not in possession of the all information, facts or having actually inspected the watch in person.

I have tried to summarise the information & key characteristics, ascertained from public sources and supported by scans, below:-

    - Series 1 - Original Deep Sea Specials (<10 produced) dated 1953

    1. No. 5 SOLD by Christies, London in June 2000 (rumoured to have been bought by Rolex)
    2. No. 1 SOLD by Christies, Geneva in November 2005

Pictured in Scans 1 and 2, please note the dial crowns are identical, as are the case backs (not pictured but having viewed them myself, I can confirm they are the same) the engraving is similar in layout to later DRSD and reads as follows :-

    Rolex Crown (at the top)

    ROLEX OYSTER

    No 1

    DEEP SEA SPECIAL (Curved engraving)

They do NOT feature the depth rating on the case back (obviously as the Trieste had yet to submerge) Movement ref. is within a less than 100 of each other.
    Bracelets are date coded 1953.

    - Series 2 - Reproduction Display Models with Rolex Cal 1570 movement. Dated Approx 1961

    3. No. 32 SOLD by Antiquorum October 2002
    4. No. 35 UNSOLD by Antiquorum October 2003
    5. No. 9 On Display at Musee Du Leman

    Pictured in Scans 3, 4 and 5

Please note the different case styles, crown and machine engraved case backs, which display the Depth

All 3 watches have 1570 movements, whether these were the original movements or not I do not know.

    - Series 3 - Reproduction Display Models without movement. Dated Approx 1966

    6. No. 21 On Display at Science Museum, London

    Picture in Scans 6

Please note the style is the same as the Mk2 but it is without movement, and Rolex is engraved on Case back.

If anyone else can provide any additional information it would be appreciated, in attempt to document as much of the history as possible

You should watermark pics like that. Thanks for sharing. You can pull those pics down, watermark, then repost and hope they haven't been snagged for an ebay auction in the meantime.

At the moment I own an invicta 8926 (black dial automatic) and a citizen eco drive with blue dial both straps are silver/steel. The eco drive is cool because I get the accuracy of quartz but without batteries-its solar powered! pics later

Not to start hornets swirling here but I also collect fine watches, though not the particular ones you guys have been showing here.

I am suprised that one would make a fake Panerai!

Guess I'm just naive and dont collect them. Are they mainly Chinese in origin (the fakes I mean).

Fake stuff. You're a loser hiding behind your computer threatening everybody because you're a big puss. Your the same loser that flips people off and drives off. You got a big talk for someone posting watches from ebay you don't even own. You called me a BS'er and I shared pics of my watches with you and you throw me under a bus. I'd love to meet you face to face. You pm me when you're coming to DFW and I'll go out of my way to meet you. I know your ***** type. Keep the words coming loser because that's alll you have, oh, and your fake watches and fake posts you don't even own. All those watches (supposedly) and you can't afford to join the forum. Typical freeloading pos. Go pick up your unemployment!

I have only one sentence to describe you " an unrepentant low life scum*bag "

Do u know why I exposed you ?

You think you can gain respect and fame by boasting your 37 pc replicas ?

2 of which there's another member of the board agreed with me.. especially your lousy fake Rolex yachtmaster ?

Are you feeling being lousy now that your scams failed u miserably ?

Seriously...do some soul searching, and you'll see some light at the other end of the tunnel : )
