I found a pretty nice boxer.....10k miles, needs service, but I think the price is right for a nice, original, 1-owner car....the only problem (for me anyway) is it's white....my question is do any any of you have any experience painting a boxer? who would you reccomend in the nyc area? Would I get my money back trading a better color (i'd like to go black) for lack of originality? BTW - I've had a red/tan '83 for the past five years, so no need to prep me for the ownership "experience" - thanks for your comments...........john

About 20 years ago, Doug Pirone at Berlinetta Motorcars did a complete strip and re-paint on my Boxer...

The car still looks amazing, and the paint shows little signs of its age.

He is a true pro...and perfectionist.

White looks supprisingly good on a Boxer. Keep it for a while and then decide if you want to paint it.

I saw one at FOH last summer and was stunned at how good it looked.

I wouldn't carry it to anyone but Bo Pirkle in Tucker, Ga.(770.939.6982). He has been painting Ferrari's since the 275 was a new car and is the absolute best. He has painted everything from 308s to 250GTOs...I have seen cars shipped to him from all over the world to be painted. He ain't cheap, but if you want the best, there's no better. It would be well worth the cost to ship her down...when its finished you could then fly down and enjoy a nice ride home...

    Is white original?

IMO, these cars are 'popping' to the point where the car should be kept original color........or changed BACK to it.....LOL!

Unless money is no object, of course........play on!

a restrip $15-20k, plus extra if they find old damage not repaired properly, sometimes they would just throw extra filler on old damage vs spending extra time to rework the metal perfectly on older repairs.

For a proper restrip windows out which many times can get damaged when removing you could be out a few more thousand unless they do it half way and keep them in.

Its not that big a deal to change color on older Ferraris such as BBs since the hidden panels are painted black unlike newer cars they are the body color, my BB used to be silver or grey and had a restrip to metal and is comlpletely red now

Plan on it taking 6 months or more. The trim is actually an epoxy paint not anodized at least on early cars, had it all redone on mine

    frank,

i have heard bo does a very nice job. as the gentleman posting is in or near nyc, it may be best for him to go to pirone. pirone has a substantial resume and has at least one pebble beach win to his name...he is also very, very good.

if my car stays on the east coast, i will take my car to bo if i ever need paint or touch up. i saw a 308 color change that he did several years back and it was far better than the factory finish.

I would estimate the price for a bare metal job to be $25k+ for a top job. Bo Pirkle once told me that painting a Boxer is like painting three cars due to the front and rear clamshells along with all the vents...

Ok guys......I went to see the car, and, of course, the description given to me lacked a few "details".......Has anyone ever seen bubbling paint on a boxer? It wasn't huge but was in two spots - around the prancing horse insignia on the hood and again on the back bumper - it cant be rust, so im guessing the car was kept outside and its a moisture issue????? I didn 't mind the white, actually, but it definitely needs paint - looked like it had some sloppy respray done on the right front fender, very dull/non-matching paint.....drivers door has numerous small dents, and there are several more around the car........non-original radio.....driver was a smoker.....so i guess what we have is a car that's been sitting for three years, has 19k kms., second owner, needs a service (personally i would budget 12k for this given the car's lack of use), and at least a respray and PDR, and, more likely, a full-on bare metal job - not to mention what you might find underneath with the bubbling.....Overall, from someone with Boxer experience, this has turned out to be a pretty scary car......I might throw in some low-ball offer, but i'll probably pass.......pm me if any of you guys are interested, the cars is in ct., about an hour north of the city........Any comments appreciated, and I have no stake in this just trying to find this pig a home......The owner wants mid 60's, I think much less......john

With aluminum it is called corrosion...but it has the same consequences as rust...compromised integrity

Bubbling paint on the hood who knows its aluminim so will not have rust but possibly electrolysis or more likely filler separating as BBs use a lot of filler everywhere. The rear bumper is fibreglass and bubbles are common in the paint from heat via the exhaust, my car had it before it was repainted.

I would repaint the entire car, unless you hated the color keep it as a strip is expensive, PDR the dings in the doors and everywhere else needed then the paint shop can block them out and respray as opposed to more filler.

Sounds like this car needs paintwork and a service.

Its a resto project and will always be a turd to a certian extent unless a restoration is performed. I would buy it because I like that sort of challenge but pay accordingly. In reality its probably a $40K car, maybe $35K. Doing the work yourself and the potential for boxer price increases means you will have an awesome boxer in the end that you know inside out and not be in over your head.

...and I will make the observation, many Boxer paint jobs I've seen from the Factory were "High School Auto Shop on a good day" level of quality!

That is true. In fact, Bo Pirkle will ask you when you bring in a Ferrari for a paint job..."...do you want a high quality job or do you want it back like the factory painted it..."

Actually Big T., the owner says he picked it up at the factory, drove it around Europe, and then had Amerispec do the conversion work.......The car has an "unleaded gas only" sticker on the outside, just below the gas cap (which looks great btw.) He says he never replaced the radio, so either his memory is incorrect (he's an older gentleman) or he's the second owner.........you make the call :)
