Only an 8-cylinder mid-engined car can be a Ferrari?!?! The quintessential Ferrari is a V-12 in the front....

+1 I was at pebble beach for the intro as well and I wasn't sure about it at first from the pictures, but it really won me over after seeing it there in person. Looks great in black.

Unfortunately, that is want a lot of the Ferrari newbies think...they think the first Ferrari was a 308...as the Boxer was never officially sold in the USA they don't even know what it is anyway. They are the poseurs of the marque and will only be a Ferrari owner until the next trend comes around and then they will buy whatever it is... the 599 is the best looking production Ferrari since the 275 and there is no mid engine Ferrari that comes close to its elegance and style IMHO.

Ferrari has been around long enough that there are young adults who have no concept of what a Ferrari really is. The most valuable Ferraris today are the front engined V12's of the 1950's and 1960's - 250 GTO, 275GTB/4 Alloy. TDF's, Nart Spyders, 250 LM, California Spyders, Daytona Spyders etc etc. The 599 is the evolution of these cars both mechanically and aesthetically.
It's laughable to read an opinion that says only mid engined V8's are real Ferraris.

S'truth. I blame the schools.

Line up a TdF, SWB, 275 GTB, 365 GTB/4 and a 550/575: Family portrait.

...Add a 599: "One of these things is not like the others".

...quite. Technically, they are Dino's. ;-)

The F40 doesn't have any Dino badges, IIRC, and has a viable claim to being the "last real Ferrari" -- still ungodly fast, touched by St. Enzo, and umistakable in its aesthetic influences. 100% Ferrari. I think it's safe to say that Ferrari's focus, and perhaps its raison d'etre, during Enzo's last decade was on mid-engined beasts -- 288 GTO, TR and F40. Saying it's "the only real Ferrari" is kind of random, though.</hijack>

I'm amazed this thread is still alive. Fundamentally the F430 is a dramatic mid-engined sports car, and the 599GTB is a sharp front/mid-engined GT. There's a different aesthetic to each category. I've always found open cars much more dramatic than coupes/sedans, for example, so of course I'm biased toward an F430 Spider here. The real comparison, for 599GTB fans, is whether it holds up against the 550/575 (in terms of looks).

F430-spider especially. the 599 is nowhere near as great as the 550/575. As for the V8 midengine vs front v12 who cares they both rule-I want one of each :)

no one would probably admit it, but i'm just curious to line up all those people that said the 550 was bland, ugly, a Supra, when it was launched 10 years ago, but now these same people....oh my!, such a beautiful car...classic, soooooo great, blah, blah, blah...

don't get me wrong, i think the 550 is a handsome car, and did raise the game for front engine gt's, but time marches on...and opinions recycle with every new model introduced,
same ol , same ol...

Same block as the GT4, no?

Weren't all non-12cylinder Ferraris Dinos until 1977?

It does not.

The Maranello suffers only from the Z-28 hood scoop, the 599 has more Pokemon "surface development" than a Datsun B210.

The F106AL engine in the Ferrari-made Dino 308GT4 was based on the 365 series engine and was made by Ferrari. The 288GTO and later F40 trace their roots to that block, but it seems clear that Enzo considered the twin-turbo'ed V8 to be the ultimate powerplant for his extreme performance flagship car (the "F40", not the "D40") long after the Dinos (206, 246, 308GT4) has passed into history. It's difficult to separate the Dino 308GT4 powerplant from what came before and after. In a way, it's Ferrari's most important little car in that V8s have come to be the dominant Ferrari engine, and no one refers to the F430 as a 'Dino'.

No. Ferrari made and raced four-cylinder cars in the 1950s.

Man... I might get banned for this, but I really like the 612 in that color. IMO, looks better than the 599 there. It looks imposing and elegant.

(Hope I look good in kevlar...)

The 599 I drove was Rubino, and in person it looks so much better than in photos. I've also been up-close and personal on a 612 in Rubino, and it looks ungainly.

I agree, though, that the 612 represents very well in the silver/gray shades.
