Nice report! I'm following suit for my SS soon. Of course, if Plugzit ever gets the 355 intake gimmick working, we just might see another huge performance increase for 348's that we all will need! Watch out 355ers!

Oh, and put that damned heat shield back on, dude. Ferrari electronics and heat don't mix too well. If that car needs to be jumped now when hot then the solenoid is fried or the thrust gear is frozen due to excess heat. Heh heh, ask me how I learned about this one... Try owning a big block Corvette and removing the heat shield between the starter and the headers. :D

Removing the heat shields will not affect the starting of the car. What it will do is give you melted tail lights. It doesn't happen right away, but over time the heat does get to the lights. I know because the tail lights in my car are SHOT!

As for the guy with the hot start problem, do a search on repacking the 348 flywheel.

Wow - thoseare great numbers - puting the X-OST on my Mondial 8 next week - track pipes and getting rid of the air pump. What is the guess for hp gain?

Fair enough guys. Personally, I dont reckon there is enough heat in there to cause an issue. After my hour long run, I pulled up at home and popped the engine cover to have a look with the car turned off. There was not much heat in there I reckon and I pushed the car pretty hard in 36C heat. But you are probably right in saying that the light covers will cook over time. So I will put them in within the next few weeks. Right after I finish showing it off to everyone. :D:D

When I install mine I was planning on leaving the shield off, also.

Thats what I reckon. The XOST sits low and there is a mountain of room around it now to dissipate heat effectivly IMO. Through the engine cover grill and underneath should be plenty for hot air to escape. When I opened the cover yesterday, the wasnt the same amount of heat in there/ Just as I thought, because there is only one small muffler there now, not 2 big ones. Less metal to absorb heat, means there is less heat in the engine bay overall. Thats what I reckon anyways. Am I crazy......maybe? :p:p

It is a shame that we can't see the units because of all the heat shielding, but (personally) I'd gladly trade longevity and performance for the visual appeal of the silencer. If Ferrari had changed the design for single-can versus double-can mufflers (spider vs. early car), that might be one issue. But they didn't. So, I'll assume it's probably worth leaving on.

Having said that... I'd bet a bottle of Vodka that all the legitimately campaigned 348 Challenge cars had them removed.

My 2-cents, leave the shields on.

I would too. But I seriously dont see any issue with leaving them off. But will get around to putting them on......one day. When I am sick of showing everyone the XOST. :D:D

My shield appears to be a two piece unit. Seems like there should be a way to keep just the rear one, thus protecting the lights. You could still see the exhaust then.

They are 2 piece. One sits above the top muffler, the other in front of the tail lights. Would pay to fit that one I guess, as you could still see the XOST if you look past it. Fit them both and you wont be able to see it. :) Whatever you wanna do I guess. :)

Is part number 50 only there for the single muffler Spider 348's? Or there for the TB/TS and GTB/GTS? :) I have never noticed it in my 348. :)

Good question. I don't see the #50 listed on my 1990 ts/tb book. But in the 1994 books, it is present in all verions (US/CDN, Aus/CH, etc.)

Well, it is there. All 3 in there. :) The bulletin also says it will stop the transparent lights from deforming. But thats with the stock system. But I will now put it in mate, after I show it off. It wont hurt to have them both back in there. I wouldnt want to price up new tail lights anytime soon. :p:p Cheers mate. :)

Sounds good Pap! How about some clips on the open road - say inside the car and perhaps a flyby ... when you get the time of course
