Last night Vinny was in town and I decided to meet up with him and Jen for dinner at Cabo Cantina. Well Vinny was in town with Spyker, but happened to have a bright yellow Audi S4 and with nothing to do, I suggested an Angeles Crest run. Neither had ever been there, so I took the BMW and blasted up for one of the more fun runs I have had there.

One thing becomes apparent as you do this run at night, even though you may only have one car going in your direction after 11pm, that person will hog the road. So I drifted the BMW around them and caught Vinny.

We made it past the 5000ft elevation mark, and he swapped places with Jen.

Yeah daylight runs there are nice, but at night, you can get more speed, and not worry about anyone else on the road. I would not hesitate to reccomend it to you guys.

    Pluses for night runs:
    1) no traffic/cops/wannbes
    2) colder, dense air

Just watchout for animals, plus try not to stop to much.. a lot of freaky stuff goes on up there... ( devil worship, animal sacrifices, and dumping ( human )

My buddy works for the search and rescue up there and the stories he tells me is shocking, They usually try not to go up past the first 2 turnouts AND THEY HAVE GUNS!!!

angeles crest is near the 2 fwy and 210 fwy crossing. the zipcode in the area is 91011.

as for the animals, we saw what looked like a rabbit, up very late for a rabbit ;)

Las (fastlankan) and I live right there, we are thinking of setting up a tollbooth or selling maps and doing timing so you don't get bottlenecked by slower traffic lol

Yeah, I love those challenges of night, ice, gravel etc. You have to be good, not just daring to take it at speed. Las and I probably know it better than many people and we have seen our fare share of wrecks up there.

nice to see members of the compton nra chapter have outings too!

the great thing about being a spoiled whiteboy is that we can afford the $5 50bmg rounds and turn would be gangbangers/carjackers into hamburger on the back 9 at torre pines from the comfort of the clubhouse while they are still well out of ak range. so i suggest on your trips up AC, buy a 50bmg 'entry' weapon from birdman.org (http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/weblog/permalink/birdman/). just portable enough, yet packs a punch.

Hey gang, so you all know, there is a lot of black ice up there, loose gravel and large rocks. Also the freshly paved sections dont help all that much either bevause there is no line to take and get grip on.

black ice = looks like road, but is actually frozen over

I think I'll hold off till spring. Hit black ice once in Tahoe, lets just say some unwanted offroading followed.

There have been many articles recently sighting the fact gang activity has been on the rise within the ranks of the U.S. military from Crips and Bloods to Neo Nazi's and Skinheads. These groups are actively sending their members into the armed forces where they can now get real world city style combat training. Our armed forces are actively looking the other way since they are having a tough time meeting enlistment goals.

Being a spoiled whiteboy with a gun range and country club membership just won't cut it.

Interesting. Well, evolution had to happen sometime. I was just hoping it would be longer before they evolved and beginning holding guns upright.

There is some excellent private sector ($$$) training that far exceeds peace officer and basic US military training (what doesn't?) for real-world scenarios. Those 'fringe' folks/gang-bangers get *field of operation* training and not practical urban tactics. No videogame jockey is gonna get it either by spending his afternoons playing 'Splinter Cell'.

I have yet to see any of these people on AC, maybe out in Mojave, but not in my backyard, and if I do, I am prepared to: 1) avoid, 2) evade, 3) defend

    ANYWAY BACK ON TOPIC

The drive this morning was just as icey as yesterday. If you have the choice, take Angeles Forest (when you get to the split, it goes to the left) because Angeles Crest goes down and to the right and is mainly shaded so ice is every where from about the 3000ft mark on up. Shortly after the 5000ft mark the hairpins are just ice.

Whaaaat??? You completely misunderstood my point. Those fringe elements are showing up in the military in increasing numbers with the express purpose of going to Afghanistan or Iraq. Both of which happen to be WAR ZONES. If an actual war isn't a practical place to learn urban tactics I don't know what is and you most definately will be a step beyond any basic, private or peace officer training. Real world combat tends to do that. I never said anything about video jockeying or playing "Splinter Cell" and I read your bravado on your own weapons capabilities for what it is. Fear. I guess you'll just ratchet it up now and say that you've A. taken some private sector Navy Seal training or B. Were a soldier of fortune somewhere.

Anyway, back on topic as you say. Be safe out there. Sliding over a cliff with a 400 ft kind of negates everything and you'll never get your chance to prove that private sector training of yours.

Angeles Forest is showing some ice too, not nearly as much gravel as Angeles Crest. WARNING: there are loads of Sheriffs up and down, but mainly tagging motorcyclists on the downhill route coming back to La Canada. The downhill routes are also the worst for rocks in the roads as it does not look like they roads have been swept clear in a few days.

In general motorcyclists are going to be slower than usual as tread patterns are not condusive to wet or icey patterns or the loose gravel you will encounter, and as often as I drive this road, yesterday I almost lost control, did a little drift and decided that it was time to go back home.
