Then again.... total 911 production during the early years was pretty low. Certainly nothing like Camaros and such.

Is a '73 RS really worth 3 times the price of a '73 911S? I personally dont think so. But S prices have jumped a good bit over the last couple of years so the market may be catching up with my opinion. But either one is certainly worth LOTS more than a '73 911T with CIS.

The early 911S cars also have global appeal vs the muscle car US boomer only market segment. I do think thats going to play in a big way long term.

Still, I dont see early 911s ever being big dollar cars simply because they are not really rare cars. A fantastic early 911S is today perhaps worth $60K. Compare that to a Z28 Camaro, far more of which were made for any given model year yet are demanding double the money or more if its got the "JL8" air cleaner or whatever silly option is being hyped.

But who knows... perhaps muscle car prices will just keep on going up for several more years to come. Part of me hopes so!

I'll agree with Jim...This is exactly what has happened with Brass and Classic Era cars. (Brass, interestingly, is making a comeback as Muscle Car collectors are buying rare Simplex, Mercer, American Underslung, Stutz etc... examples and putting them in the corner as art.)

I always laugh when collectors say "there's no way people are going to collect *&*% Hondas and Acuras." It's especially interesting when the people who say it are in their 60s and 70s. My father-in-law made a similar comment once, explaning that these "rice rockets aren't rare enough and look stupid." I then asked what his first car was ('50 Ford) and if he bought it new (got it from his parents when they bought a new car,) what the first thing he did when he got it (ripped all the chrome off it,) and what did his parents think of it (thought he ruined the car by making it look stupid.) Hot rodders are hot rodders, period.

I will actually predict that before the import tuner cars begin to appreciate, we will see a surge in value of icon and popular cars from the late '70s and '80s. Smokey and the Bandit Trans Ams (Black with gold decals,) 5.0L Mustang GTs and IROC Camaros...oh yeah don't forget Ferrari 308/328s and Testarossas!!!

If there is one thing history shows us when it comes to "collectable" cars, what was popular (or most wanted but not gettable) then, is what will be be "collectable" now, or at least in the near future. The age old " I used to have one of those" or "I always wanted one of those" syndrome. Let's see, next up is Panteras, 512's, Countachs, TA's, 308's, BMW 2002, Pintos, Pacers, 240z and RX7's. In the way future, I think the NSX, M3's, M5's, ZR1's, RX7 (last style) and Vipers will be the ticket. Of course by then 308's will be a half mill... :)

pretty simple, current vintage ferrari values are a steal compared to vintage muscle car values. as the muscle car markets correct in the usa (their only market), ferrari will remain stable(based on the world market value - which is market correct in the usa and abroad).

other than that, everything is speculative. i have never figured out why enjoyment value isn't factored in, but then again, that is a different topic.

BTW, I sense a disturbance in the force. I got an email where Keith Martin said that he would NOT be doing the TV at Barrett-Jackson this year.

Because Martin and Jackson are the ones that starting beating this drum, I wonder why the split? Did Martin's recent editorial in SCM saying that the end is near come before or after he got the axe from the TV show?

I did not know that Keith Martin would not be on TV this year. Could be because Keith speaks the truth behind all this muscle car hype.

Absolutely. But that's not really in question. Significant cars such as the Cobra and GT 40's that ran in Le Mans *are* going to be snapped up and exported when the Dollar is weak versus the Euro, Yen, or Yuan.

It's the "resto-mods" fad where every Tom, Dick, and Harry have added chrome plating and purple paint to a Corvair or Gremlin that's eventually going to fall on its face.

Have you looked at what stock condition 93-98 Supra Turbos are doing? Some are in the 50-60K range - crazy! Bandit Trans-ams are also going up fast as are completely stock early NSX's (still fairly cheap though). Growing up I really wanted a 308 GTB QV and a Countach... got the 308 and now Countach's are increasing very fast. This market is not increasing nearly as fast as the muscle car market and that is fine for me. I think it proves this market is more stable. I consider Italian cars to be blue chip cars and a very good and fairly safe buy. I DO think that in the muscle world right now that Shelby cars are a safe bet and have more room to increase in value.

The Supra Turbos might be the exception, as tuners finally figured out that the stock Supra engine could be safely bumped up to 1,000hp.

But Shelby's are hit and miss (see pic).

I think that I'll go buy one just to say that I bought a Shelby...

(honestly, I remember that as a great kid car with a little "boost" gauge that you could watch kick in as you drove).

That's why you want to be a Seller at auctions rather than a buyer.

I know that the R/T version was pretty fast. They also put that engine in the Dodge R/T (four door)- 2.4L turbo. Did this Shelby version have the 224hp engine that was in the R/T?

As with any market there is "smart money" and "dumb money". If you look at the vehicles sold by B-J in 2006 and their offerings in 2007 ask yourself if there are any more big name collectors selling into the market. Personally I feel that the "smart money" sold into the market at B-J and are now bidding at R&M or Russo & Steele. B-J is just another made for TV reality show.

IMO, the vast majority of "smart money" does not buy at auction.
