There's also the argument that back then the cars looked like Ferraris and didn't need an 'F' in designation.

While the F is for Ferrari, it is a quite stupid designation IMHO...a Ferrari Ferrari512 or Ferrari Ferrari355...why did Ferrari think they needed the brand name designated in the model name?

    I have a similar question...

What does the last number mean, like 360 or 355?

As well they should since they powered 90% of the F1 field back in the day-and that was thanks to Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth-Ford, from what I can recall, basically gave them the $$$$($900K???)

Buddy of mine used to do demo derbies @ Freeport raceway in the 80s; ran only Chevys but he came upon an LTD that was too good to pass up; prepped the car, towed it out, drove it onto the start line, shut the engine off and it wouldn't start back up-car ran fine right up until racetime. He was pushed off the track....

My buddy came up with a line that sticks with me to this day-

    "FORD-Fails On Race Day"

Needless to say, he never raced a Ford again....

Sad to see Ford in their current state-and the thing that scares me is that they appear to still be clueless.....I hope I'm wrong....

As for the "F", it stands for Ferrari-you wouldn't want to confuse the F360 with an L360(Lambo) you know...;)

3.60 liter engine for the 360...

3.50 liter engine for the 355... but with the 5 at the end they wanted to make clear that it was the first car with 5 valves/cilinder.

Like has been said before... Ferrari isn't always really consistent in designation :)

This is why Ferrari is so hard to follow, Back in the early days the number stood for CC's per cylinder a 125 was a 1.5 litre 12 cylinder, a 166 was 2.0 litre 12 cylinder, a 250 was a 3 litre 12 cylinder. But didn't they make other than 12's?

We all know a 512 is a 5 litre 12 cylinder, a 308,328,348 3.0, 3.2 and 3.4 litre 8 cyl. Then they threw a wrench in the works with 355 3.5 litre 5 valves per cylinder. A 360 is 3.6 litre a 430 is 4.3 litre so what does the zero stand for?

I figured that the 5 was for valves per cylinder, and the 3.6/3.5 liter designation is obvious. But where did the 8 come from in 348 and others like that? They just seem pretty random.

And true they aren't consistent with designation, but they are consistent in having 3digit numbers (other than F40, F50, and Enzo) even all the way back to cars such as the 166.

F40 was unveiled at or near Ferrari's 40th anniversary and the F50 on their 50th. Rumors we might see an F60 in near future. Some people refer to an Enzo as an F60. There are rumors that the Enzo was going to be named F60 but when the name was leaked to the press Ferrari changed it.

You've got that right :) You just have to know :D

Random indeed... the "8" in 348, 328,... is as simple as 8 cilinder... :)

    '8' comes from 8 cylinders, ie. 328= 3.2 litre V 8, 348 = 3.4 litre V 8.

    512 = 5.0 litre V12.

Then they changed after that....? (355 and so on.)

Right... So why not a 368 and 438, because according to Ferrari's guidelines for model designation, the 360, 430, and 550 are 3.6, 4.3, and 5.5 liters respectively, which is true... however, they all have 0 cylinders and 0 valves, which have both been represented by the third numbers on previous cars...

Wait a minute I got it!!!

    They must be rotary powered!!!

    Haha :p

    Oops... ;)

    :D Now that's what it's all about isn't it? ;)

    Like has been said before...
    Sometimes they're consistent... sometimes they're not... :D
Maybe it depends on the weather in Italy? :D
    I believe the "0" is just to make it a 3-digit code... 3.60liter... ?
Like you said yourself, in that they (mostly) are consistent...

By weather you must mean the "tobacco" clouds filling the office...

Enzo: "Hey man, dude so we should name this next car the F36."
Pizza Delivery Boy: "Ummm... sir, why are you telling me this..."
Enzo: "Next time you interrupt me you're fired... wait, how many pepperonis are there on this pizza?"
PDB: "...ummm you ordered a ham pizza...:
    Enzo: "HOW MANY DAMMIT?!"
    PDB: "Zero I guess."
Enzo:"I've got it! We'll call it the F360! You get a raise young man."
    PDB: *leaves

While we are on the topic, I have always wondered when refering to a certain model, most people will just say 355, 430, etc. but will ALWAYS refer to the F40 or F50 with the "F" designation. why???
