Changing belts, tensioners and pump on 328

There are a lot of threads with tips in the archives if you search, but I'm not sure anyone has done a soup to nuts procedure with a lot of pics. I took a ton of pics when I did the belts on my 308, with the intent of writing it up, but it has been too long now. I would need to wait and write it up next time I do it again.

Cam locks are very helpful, whether you are removing the cam covers to check valve clearances or not. Verell makes a set for the 308 QV which I think will also fit the 328.

It is really not that hard. The AC compressor makes the front bank a bit of a pain, but I can do a major in a weekend. If you have a lift it's a LOT easier!!

Sorry, but the 4V cam lock is still on the drawing board. However, given the amount of interest I'm getting, I need to find time to finish the design.

The 2V cam lock is in production tho.

 

Can you do that sometime in the next two weeks?

I would just add you can do it in a weekend if you're *really* good .

I'm just focusing on the cam seals / valve adjustment / belts / tensioner bearings and I have seen a half dozen weekends go by. Not that I worked on it every Saturday and Sunday but I hate to admit how many hours I spent.

For me of limited skills without step-by-step procedures I have had to take a *lot* of notes and rely on this board for research and help.

And, then there's the inevitable "while in there" stuff. Some I caught on the way in and ordered parts. Others, like now, I'm catching on the way back out and ordering parts.

Awhile back in Tech Q&A someone posted that that snap-on tool only works with cam gears with the new rounded profile. Have you actually used one on a QV?

In spite of what Birdman says, a service w/valve adj & WP rebuild has NEVER taken me LESS THAN 2 weekends.

Usually because it takes time to align at least 2 of the cams, also to thoroughly degrease & cleanup the whole area, some fastener somewhere refuses to come off, and removing the pesky A/C compressor causes some stupid problem.

Not saying that it can't be done, just that I don't seem to be able to do it.

it may also be that I'm coaching the owner thru his first major & it takes a lot of time to explain everything that we're doing/about to do. Of course. Then there are a couple of my friends that like to distract me with their kibitzing. ;^)

Will be interesting to see how fast doing the major on my car goes next year. Hmm, I'll be installing my adjustable cam gear system, & also i'll be installing my SC, so won't be able to separate out the time for the major.

 

It's the B***S**ting that takes up the extra 2 weekens. IMHO
