thanks, im a little nervous though because this is the first animal that is solely my responsibility. my dad doesn't particularly want me to get him, and my mom considers anything that small a rodent, so she won't touch it. but for some reason, that's the one animal that i have been fond of. idk, but maybe it's that kind of chirping sound they make, but i just think they're the coolest little things ever. and plus, i'm always a fan of adopting any animal, granted that giving them a good home is important.

We had one for years we named "Penny". Very nice pet. We had one of those igloo-like domes inside the cage that she liked very much. Her favorite food were those molasses covered tiny corn cob things.

We also have a cat and it would sit and watch Penny in her cage all day long. We used to joke that the cat was watching "Pig TV". The occassional movement and the squeeking noises were addicting for the cat.

Make sure you keep the cage clean and the food supplies sealed in bags or plastic containers. You'll get little flying bugs if you don't keep up with it (I think the eggs for those little bugs often come in the food supply).

Here is a link to a web site with lots of info on them:
    http://www.kornage.co.uk/guinea_pig_faqs.htm

    Good luck.

Looking back on the long list of pets I've had, I think guinea pigs were the worst. That annoying, shrill "reeeeee-e-reeeeeeeee!!" at all times of the day.

Well, maybe a tie with stinky $1 fiddler crabs.

I had a dwarf hamster once. I'm not sure how that will compare but they are fun pets and aren't very hard to care for.

their front teeth have a tendency to grow out to be too long, so they need something to chew on, like the toilet paper roll or a small piece of wood to keep the teeth down to a manageable level, because if it has to be cut off, the pig doesn't really enjoy it.

you guys ever heard of a "skinny pig"? it's a guinea pig genetically engineered to be hairless except for its feet and nose.
    Google it.

Of the caged critters, I like Gerbils. My son "won" the privilege of keeping the school's guinea pig one summer. That was fun.

here's a quick 3 month update: the thing eats it's weight in lettuce everyday, makes a mess on my desk from when it runs around it's cage, eats the shoe boxes that i turn into houses for him, makes a mess in his cage from his pee and poop, starts shrieking around 4 in the morning because it's hungry, but other then that, the little thing is tons of fun!
