My 328 GTS has 85K miles, and it's been almost four years since it's last major. So it went down to the shop yesterday, and we started digging into today.

I'm very, very lucky -- I'm doing the service with Bret owner of Madrona Autoworks here in Olympia (bartmondial on the f-chat,) who is a good friend. I'm going to do a story on the whole process for my column, and maybe another publication, so I'm essentially doing some of the work under the guidance of a SAE Master Mechanic who has done plenty of Ferrari V8 works (Mondials, F355) (and owns a Mondial himself.) Plus this is first-class shop, so tools are right at hand.

I'm taking pictures of almost all steps, so it should be fun to see the process after the fact.

It was running quite well with just a small vacuum leak...Once in, the car is looking pretty good overall. I'm missing more than a few splash shields underneath. (Not uncommon, but if someone has some laying around, or has templates to make new ones, let me know.) Found a split fuel line that's weeping, and the injector seals are all in dire need of replacement (vacuum leak found!!!.) Oil in tranny and engine look nice with no metal.

We'll see what tomorrow brings. The big thing is just not scratching the new paint!!!

For a 328, 85K is just getting started. Good for you.

Can't wait to see/hear about your project! This is the kind of stuff that I'm particularly interested in since i'm looking for my 1st 3X8 Ferrari and am planning on doing the majority of the work on it myself.

One question though, how many miles did you put on the car in almost 4 years?

Congrats, how many miles did the car have when you bought it?

I would be very interested in pictures of the process. I will be changing belts, tensioners and bearings next May, so those pictures would be very helpful, in case you can share them.

    Thanks,

The last major was done at 3/5/02 (so we're actually almost to 5 years!) with 68,621 miles. I got it at 84,602 in June, and is now at 85,200ish. I lost most of the prime driving season to the car being painted this past summer.

That is fantastic! I bet your car runs especially good with 85k on the clock. I love high mileage Ferraris, it means they are used and loved. My car has a little over 57,500 on it. Should have over 60k by end of summer! :)

Mine has almost 46K. Nice to see it being driven. Sometimes I wish I had a longer commute and better parking. Congratulations, good health to your 328!
