I'm planning on taking the wife to warmer climates for our 5 year anniversary in March. St. Martin, St. Thomas, St. John, St. Barts, DR, Playa del Carmen, Key West, and SoBe, are all in the running, but I've never been to cancun and it seems as though it could be a pretty wild time. Anyone have any experiences or recommendations for places to stay in cancun? Is it all Spring Break? I'm 31.
    Much appreciated. SG

Went with my GF once... It was actually a lot of fun (way moreso than the Bahamas). Can't remember the name of the resort we stayed at at the moment, but will let you know when it pops to mind. Sure, lots of Spring Break style action, but unless you go at the height of S.B. season when the place is crawling with the college-age, it's actually a blast (it could be fun then too, but it's a different crowd).

That said, I would love to go to some of the other places you've mentioned and have heard great things about them too...

Hey Simon! I went to Cancun when I was 16 in February right before it starts getting crazy. It was still a ton of fun there. So many things to do besides just getting drunk and partying. The resort I stayed at with my family was all inclusive and offered many things to do. Went para-sailing (Insane by the way), snorkeling, tons of shopping your wife would like (when I was there all the big name stores were being built on the strip Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, etc.), clubs all over the place(your married so not sure about that one ;) ), too many things to list!

The resort was called Beach Palace. I remember though it was a medium-end resort, but even that wow. All inclusive is the way to go!

There are a few mini-boat and wave-runner rental places make sure you try that out!

i went to cancun in november last year for a conference. It was terrible. I had to stay on the resort and work. But the weather was nice and the food/liquor was very abundant. Im sure youll have a good time. I guess the main point of this post is never go to cancun for work and make sure you leave your resort (soemtimes hard to do cause everything is free).

We've been going to St. Barth for more than ten years. A Caribbean island with French flair, food, and clothing optional beaches. What more could you ask for?

Just got back from Cancun a few months back, we stayed at Casa Maya. If you and your wife like to party and dance AND are not the jealous type you can have a great time. Also take a day trip to the caves and ruins, well worth the trip

I'm guessing by your post that you've already been to Playa. After being in both Playa and Cancun, I can't really see why I'd spend any time in Cancun again. IMHO, Playa has all the fun partying opportunities of Cancun (considering this is an anniversary trip, not a pick up trip) with a super-cool, laid back atmosphere, euro-international feel, and full range of accomodations. I'm going down for Cinco de Mayo (no idea how to spell it).

Your consideration list sounds great, so I'm sure you won't go wrong. My 5th is coming up in June, hoping to steal a weekend in Paris i f I can find someone to watch the kid!

Cancun is great. I went many years ago with my ex. Every night is treated like a friday night. I hear it's gotten a bit more expensive then when i went, they even have a go-kart track if i remember right..

    Len,

where do you like to stay in SB? I've been staying at the Glenny and it is a bit overdone and overpiced ( what isn't there?) did the yacht thing once too.

Your thoughts, Great deals at the Atlantis in Paradise Island but that is a whole diff. big resort scene. good for a family though.

Cabo or St Barts both make Cancun look silly...Cancun is way overcrowded and a cheesy crowd at that.

Just got back from a week stay in Cancun. Weather was beautiful, and hotel was phenomenal. We stayed at the Paradisus, which is about 20 minutes away from the hotel strip/downtown Cancun. Whole area was quiet as we went after the holiday vacationers and before the spring breakers. The service we received at the hotel was nothing short of incredible..Everyone was very friendly...

Dominican Republic is also growing as a 'hot spot'. Real Estate there has been booming with a tremendous interest from Europeans and now Americans...Properties we looked at 6 months ago are now selling for 30% - 50% higher...

I was in Punta Cana, DR a few years ago. Except for the armed guards patrolling the perimeter of the resort, great place. Oh, the armed soldiers ripping apart tourist bags departing the island was just a smidge intimidating.

Serious, besides the security I'd go back in a heart beat.

I go about 5 times a year.....I agree w/ the previous comment about Playa. A little bit more layback and the nightlife is more subdue.

But if you go w/ a spouse or g/f and want to stay near downtown, stay at Le Blanc....It's about 1 mile from all the nightlife and they will pamper you to DEATH....Can't say enough good thing about it. Have a great time.

Went to Cancun for the holidays (all inclusive), wife and I found it very clean, safe, reasonably priced and good eats. If anything it was a bit too "Americanized" for us. Almost like the Vegas strip on a beach. Plenty of hardcore nightlife to be found at places like Coco Bongo's and Senor Frogs.
