    Hello,
After removing the spare tire and battery cover to give the 328 a jump-start, I decided to re-tack the vinyl drape that hangs from the fiberglass cover behind the spare tire and which covers some fuses, wires, etc, etc....

While it was off I looked around to check out just whats beneath this fibergalss cover. When I noticed a this, see pics. I thought so too, but bear droppings they weren't.

I think thats part of your AC system, could be one of those thing that when it gets too cold and start to ice up the AC compressor will shut off but I could be wrong.

That is the expansion valve for the A/C. The black gooey stuff around the hose ends is/was insulation.

Before you put the cover back on, spread that tar like putty all over the clamped capilary coils and valve assembly. This will assist keeping a constant temp environment around the valve.

Thanks for the input about the black gooey stuff.
    Just teach which are the
"clamped capilary coils and valve assembly"

Where would I find a replacement insulation for this?

    Thanks, John.

I assumed it was the AC when I saw this as well but intially wondered what all the black crap was . It would seem a more cosmetic alternative was available in 1989. I'm not sure what the exact makeup is and wait to see a response.

Local A/C Supply house will know.......Johnstone Supply, here.....

Get some 1" Armorflex insulation sheet for re-cutting your hood sealing foam radiator strips, while you're there, if needed!

That's some type of self adhesive sealing insulation mastic.........no idea what other than that you'd call it........"pooky" is actually not far off! LOL!

    Thanks Big Tex too,
My "hood sealing foam radiator strips" ? Hmmm not sure what you mean...

If I could just get a pic of what the original set-up lookied like that would be great.....

Ok, so in modern cars today there is the soft foamy hose insulation on the ac compressor hoses and such...

I do the same thing here??

That was the purpose of the big plastic piece that covers it all up. That is like saying the inside of the engine looks like crap when the oil pan is off. That insulating tape is industry standard.

I was talking about the foam across the top of the radiator, stuck to the hood......it 'melts away' over time much as this stuff has done, although maybe your expansion valve was replaced.......
