    Hiya Ferrari people,

I am after some help and advice!
At age 38 I have finally decided to follow my life long dream and get a
    Ferrari.
Buying one in the USA and shipping it out of LA to NZ is looking like my
best option..... But I would be intersted in other options, maybe the UK or
    Austraila etc?

I have joined a number of Ferrari news groups and subscribed to the Ferrari
market letter and contacted a dealer in Connecticut.

I am after a 308GTB, with carbs, in steel..... (steel just because the glass
ones I have seen have been much more $$$)
MUST have been red and tan from the factory orginally

I want to buy a "good" car, running car to use, not show, service history or
most of it, need not be restored and as I am a professional painter, paint
    condition does not worry me.

Mileage worries me less than condition and seivce history.
I am flexable on price as I appreciate that the condition and service
history and any number of other factors dictate the market value.

I have given myself 12 months to find and buy the "right" car.

I look forward to any comments advice or offers of a cars!

    Regards
    Gavin,
    New Zealand

We are dealing 308s down the page!

You should investigate the 'glass car in Vegas ...the steering wheel is on the wrong side for US which is correct for your country?

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh now...... let's not go markin up the carb cars just yetfrom last month. Haven't bought mine yet!

Good suggestion, Alan, that right side steering wheel may fit well in this case for Gavin.
Gavin, good luck in your search.

I think the car in Vegas is UK specs as it has wet sump engine, IIRC, but does have a single distributor..........a strange combo.....bears further investigation..

I've lost the link to the car, any one have it?

It'd be perfect for New Z.....

I'm just curious, wich one would you buy for the same price of $30,000?

    A) a US 1977 308 GTB, 30K milles, carb, Red/Tan, well maintained and up to date with service history or

    B) a US 1984 308 QV 40K miles (10K miles more) Red/Tan, well maintained and up to date with service history

Both cars are in between good to excelent condition and stock.

I think you're right. I'd love to find a Euro glass car, but getting it into California would require an act of Congress.

    Me??? LOL!!!

No truthfully it's almost apples to oranges...

The later car will be a more refined daily driver, smog compliant, injection is trouble free for the most part but has TONs of niggly bits like the Warm Up Regulator.....

The earlier car (I own two and have purchased a third...) is a much rawer driving experience and IMO is a better reflection of the original 1975 design intent......you could run open headers with a NON CAT car and still be legal, and chipmunks and old ladies pass out from the exhaust fumes........they also have needs, mainly in finding a Weber guru and maintaining the distributors for proper mechanical advance...

My feelings are the older cars will be more valuable over time followed by the later ones!

    Since you asked.....

You get the carbed car and give the other one to the Mrs......LOL!

Well, the only sanity in the madness is to buy a bit of 'history'..........

Only the 308 and Boxer models represent the chance to choose which side of the line you want to stand on....

And for myself the CATs were a huge issue, the source of fires in many later cars due to ignition problems....single bank firing and such.....

..and the cams were reprofiled for 1978 requirements as well..........
