Purchased a 83qv yesterday, 24,000 miles, started, ran and idled fine. Car has been started and moved in an out of garage every other month for the past 6 years. No obvious oil leaks. No road time at all. Going to change belts and tensioner's, water pump bearing and fluids. Need advice on quality belts and tensioner's. Have been reading alot about aftermarket products and not sure which way to proceed. My first Ferrari, and any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Happy to be here from Cincinnati. Thanks

    Welcome man! Congrats!

Ricambi America (sponsor here) has the belts and tensioners....several OEM vendors but most work fine...

Anyone have a real preference? More important that you realize to change them!

TRutlands also offer kits, IIRC and truthfully Algar is a very competitive parts dealer, for any Ferrari specific items.

CONGRATS on your new 83 308 QV, I also have an 84 QV. I think what you are doing is the right thing, changing belts, bearings, and watter pump is absolutely a must at least you know when, who, and what was replace as this will definitely give you a peace of mind at least for the next 3 to 5 years. Did it came with any service record at all or any type of history?

Anyway can you post some pictures please, thanks and enjoy your new toy.

Hello Todd. Welcome to the fold! You will never be the same. :) I drive a '79 308GTB, fully standard specification (Euro.) and have owned it for 9 years. Had a Mondial QV along the way and enjoyed it as well.

I grew up in Maysville, KY, about 60 miles up the river from you. Live in Houston now.

Fill us in on your 'new' car please. Post pictures if you have them. :)

    regards,

Thanks for all the replies. My 308 was bought new in N.C.-15,000 and a new clutch in 86- sold to someone in N.J. misc. service thing's done -sold to someone in Chicago then to someone in Mich. So this makes me the 5th owner. Car seems taken care of, last owner did all the service work. I did here a whine when first started it up, went away after warm- aux. belts-tensoiners or cam belts ? better safe than sorry. Its been 0-9 dergrees here the last week and now we have 5 in. of snow so busy with other things right now. But I will have more info and pics soon. I've read about tensioner bearings that fall apart at the parts counter and of others they cant keep on the shelves. Belts the same, no cords in the teeth and poor quality. I'm a newbie and dont want to screw up my first belt change, so will be doing alot of research. I welcome any help I can get. Thanks

    Hi Todd:
Congrats on the car & welcome to the club!
There is someone else on here from Cinci...maybe he can help you when you get started!
My nephew lives there but he was afraid to drive mine so I don't think he be much help for wrenching.
Do you have all the manuals? There are some here http://ferrari.cdyn.com/ and here http://dino308gt4.com/
The GT4 manual is the basic one the 308, 328 manuals are essentially supliments to it.

In case you have not seen it yet, here is a great article to guide you thru the belt change. http://www.camerafilters.com/ec/timing.htm

    Enjoy,

    Mark

The bearings falling apart was the observation(s) of those that had no understanding of the design. Do not let it worry you. As for belts there is little difference in price between OE factory belts that say Ferrari on them and belts made in fledgling Eastern European democracies and slave labor Asian countries.

If you buy the parts from a sponsor here, Ricambi America you will only get quality parts (he sells no junk) at a very fair price with outstanding service.

Like anything else out there, you can find cheaper but caveat emptor.

Well Todd, it looks like we have a lot in common. I to have just purchased and received on 2/1/07, a 85 308 GTSi QV. It was shipped from Paris, Maine and is in show room condition with only 7, 105 miles. I live in West Chester, OH. When the weather improves we are going to have to get together. Regarding your belt change question, it was recomended to me that the timing belts should be changed every 5 years or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. On my car the maintenance records show the belts were changed in October 2005. The nearest Ferrari dealer I can find in our area is the Midwest Auto Group in the Columbus area. I would like to find a reputable place of service closer to the Cincinnati area? I'll be in touch.

Picked up my car yesterday in Mich. Had to wait 2 weeks for the pre. owner to get back from vacation. Got it up and the wheels off this morning, have a cam seal leaking on the rear bank and the air pump belt is missing. Wonder if thats one the reason's for how rich it running. Should have the cam covers off by noon tommorrow. I'm going to replace them along with the water pump and all the hose's. Whiskeyman I've heard you should change your belts every 3 yrs. I've talked to the regional Ferrari Club rep. and he told me about a mech. in Cincy. E-mailed him with my # but he's yet to get back to me. Really enjoyed wrenching on my ride today! Going to try and attch. some pics.
