    I'm sure this is a more serious comment than this thread probably warrants, but...

    ...why are people so surprised when smart people do weird things? Case in point: Prof Daniel Carleton Gajdusek. Smart bloke, IQ in the 180s. Spent lots of time in New Guinea and described the transmission of kuru by the cannibalistic eating of human brains, won the Nobel Prize. That led to further research and the subsequent discovery and characterisation of prions. In addition to scientific brilliance, he was also an ardent pedophiliac, bringing native adolescent boys home with him to "adopt" them (and also sleep with them to relieve the tedium). Pleaded guilty, spent 19 months in Fed prison, 5 months "probation" in Europe.

    I'm sure in the illustrious early part of his life and career, people thought he was well-adjusted too. He was the head of various virology labs at the National Institutes of Health for a while.

    Smart people can be crazy too.
