ok if this is gonna be a forum suggestions thread... if it's possible, i would like for the image placeholders to actually have the width/height fields specified. i hate going into a page with several images (usually ME posting them) and just have the screen jump around for 30 seconds like Michael J Fox is using my mouse. if the H/W attributes are specified on render of the page, the size of the page won't change as images are loaded.
You're an *******, I like you. We should be friends. Spellcheck will require load somewhere, and if it's in the forum itself, that means extra overhead. Like I said before, if you're using Firefox, you can get an extension that does spellcheck. If you're using IE, I KNOW there is a plugin for spellcheck, I've used it before. I LOVE Ferrarichat because it's ultra streamlined. It's fast, I can get online and check whatever the heck I want every few minutes and still get work done. I agree with you images enhance the forum experience, I was just stating the reason I had heard before on why we weren't allowed to link to external images. All three of your suggestions are actually there to prevent server load. However, if I remember right on the main thread page it shows 50 pages max versus 20. I don't think the F-Chat servers are in any danger, I hope Rob can read this I'd really a "less than 30 seconds" delay because I type and read very fast, sometimes I'll end up getting four or five posts done within thirty seconds. Same goes with searching, sometimes I'll realize that my search query could be better refined by just selecting one other option (specify the forum or something). Oh, could we also get free virgin pina'coladas while we're at it? I'm so thirsty.
Spell check was attempted back in 2001 if I remember correctly it didn't work very well but that was older software. If members are that concerned with it, check it with MS WORD or whatever spell check program you use. Please add some new post icons, at least have thumbs up, rolling eyes, a few others added. Just a couple new ones & lets not go overboard. I thought about it & this board can do without the animated emoticons that with just wind up causing loading time issues we could all do without. Add a tech section. We have so many members with a wealth of information & experience with PC's, iMac’s, online gaming, software, hardware, questions & reviews, etc.. I think it could do nothing but benefit this board & even make it even a better place. Other than that, I'm happy just being a member here & learning something new every day.
There is a thread about "how manly is your car". I think the spelling errors make this site more manly. I make them and sometimes I can even figure out when someone else does. On the flip side some guys seem pissed when someone uses incorrect spelling or grammar. A lot of members have help with this in the office.
I'm confused. None of my three suggestions are there. That's why I suggested them. All three are ways to support the user and their task while still protecting the server from load. The gestapo approach of "30 seconds delay for every search, for everyone, and for every time" is really stupid. It reminds me of one of the biggest threats in software: lazy software developer does something half-assed and the user experience suffers. Again, all three above are compromises. Something even smarter could be implemented - more than 5 searches 2 minutes, start slowly incrementing the forced search delay. Anything except the way it is now.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant that they are implemented as they are right now to prevent server load from shooting up.
another suggestion... can we please have the date format listed so the month is written as text? i'm tired of the stoopid american date format, to most of the world 7/2/2007 means the 7th of Feb, not the 2nd of Jul. we don't need the date rearranged (but it seems strange this software is one of the few that doesn't support localisation ), the other 99% of my day the date is in a logical format, it'd just be nice if the month was written to avoid confusion.
So like 7-Feb-2007? That seems like a reasonable compromise. Then the French are going to demand is be 7-Fév-2007!
