Brought my car into local dealer for routine service and replacement of throwout bearing. Got a call 2 days later that all is fixed, but my odometer now reads in kilometers rather than miles, and my gauges now read in celsius rather than fahrenheit. He also mentioned that they found and soldered a loose wire at the starter motor (????). No problem before I brought it in for repair. On top of that the odometer display now shows over 360,000 km covered (car has 18,000 miles). Only dealer solution=replace entire pod for $3400. Of course my extended warranty won't cover this. What controls the metric vs. US readout? Is it user-configurable? What controls the odometer? Speedo works fine. Oil pressure works fine, temp gauges seem to work fine. Are the CPU's still keeping accurate mileage records even though the display is wacky? Any ideas? $3400 to fix the odometer sounds stupid. Any help is appreciated.
The instrument panel is programmed and configurable for any market via an SD2 within the limits of the instrument faces. I have not tried to change one from Miles to Kilometers but have been told it can be done. As for what is now on the odometer FNA has the capability to change it. When new units are ordered they run the odometer up to the cars known mileage but it remains to be seen if they have a willingness to do it as a repair on a customer unit. That is something I would be interested in knowing. Many states including mine require a replacement odometer show existing mileage and many instrument shops have the ability to do that job as well. You might check with Palo Alto Speedometer in Palo Alto Ca and MO-MA in Albuqerque to see if they do it.
If you are telling us that the speedo and odo worked fine and in MPH before the service but not after the service I should think this is a problem that the repair shop should be fixing for you at no cost? Russell
we sell used units for $1,750, I am pretty sure the one I have has 25k miles on it, we offer a 6 month warranty on everything we sell Ryan, www.specializeditalianrecycling.com
Amen!!! It worked before you took it in and bet a simple ODB link can change it. Call it 10 minutes on an ODB. If they try charging you for new dash get it all in writing. You want ALL communiation IN WRITING as if they continue on this path of charging you, your lawyer would be the person to seek.
Speedo and gauges still work. Only odometer is wacky. I am assuming that this dealer (Miller) used an SD-2 to diagnose this. The only odd thing is that it worked fine when I brought it in, but after they "soldered a loose wire" it went bad. I'll get another buddy with an SD2 to hook it up.
