348 glove box gas struts, all go bad?

Mine was shot when I got the car. I bought a new one (from the dealer) and it crapped out almost immediately, so I gave up on it. JUNK.

 

glovebox? Never knew I had one

Mine is ok, but I dont see it lasting very long either. Piss poor smallish style strut. Let us know what you sort out Mera. I am always open for improvement ideas.

 

Mines KO as well, would be interested in an alternative.

All gas struts go bad eventually, I'd imagine the glove box unit loses pressure quickly because of its size and rarity of use. How often do you guys open the glove box? I hardly ever open mine.

 

I only open mine when I need my gloves !

 

Yup, mine crapped out almost 1 month after I replaced it. Worthless and an alternative solution would be nice.

I never open mine btw! I do not keep anything in there, so it never gets used.

Mine are shot as well. Replaced once, will not bother anymore. If you come up with a better solution, would definitely be interested.

What's needed is a locking prop rod strut.

Here's a pic of one for the hood of a 1995 Corvette. Note the white arrow. To lower the shock, you have to push half of the strut that direction. At that point the unit aligns vertically, and then you can lower it to lower the hood.

It opens vertically without such intervention, and "locks" so that it can't drop back down by moving slightly to one side.

Mine are still okay, 18 years old, and original (I think).
But when they go bad, I don't think I'll sweat it, because I only use it maybe once every three months.

Not sure, but would be probably be cheaper re-gasing old one.

Don't you guys read these pages?! The glove box shock is an attempt at humor by the Ferrari engineers. Seriously, they installed it to be funny. It's kind of a characiture of the engine cover struts, which also don't last long. They never figured you'd never open the glove box so you'd never find out that the shock leaks almost instantly. It's like the tire refiller that has a 1-year life, but no one replaces, except I don't think any glove box strut has lasted 1 year.

I'm telling ya, get a wooden clothespin.

 

Recently spent $75 at Ricambi (sic?) via the Web to replace mine. Google it. Based on this thread, will be curious to see just how long it does last. If (when?) it fails, the obvious Plan B is "vvassallo's" recommendation. I will paint it black to match the interior, of course. My registration is about the only thing will fit in there anyway! Only need that when the officer asks for it.
