Old men don't lose their hair -- they merely misplace it.

Heck, old guys have hair coming out of their ears. (Literally) :p

"I'm not bald -- I'm taller than my hair." :D

I feel your pain. Hairloss is traumatic. Was for me, I've dealt with much more stressful things since, but in my mid twenties, it was not a good time. I never saw it coming, then next thing I knew I was checking myself out in the mirror 45 times a day, making sure my hair was arranged in such a way you couldn't see my scalp. Then one night after going to a club and making 8 trips to the bathroom, playing self hair stylist, I went home and took my beard trimmer and took it down to a 1. Then took a Mach 3 and finished the job. Did I look particularly good-not so much- but I felt absolutely liberated. I would walk into convenience stores and the clerks would look at me like I was going to rob the place, it was empowering. While there are women out there that will have found you more attractive with your thinning pate, you will find that there is a magical subculture of women that love bald guys. You'll find guys respect the fact that your not trying to hide what natures done and you've just confronted it. Thinning guys will respect the balls you have and they don't.

All that being said, do I miss my hair, **** yeah. If I could have my hair back, whether surgical or chemical and it was imperceptible that it was unnatural, tell me where to write the check. I think we are close to that day, but its not here yet.

So my advice, if your not ready to go quietly in the night... try a combination of extra strength rogaine foam- twice a day- every day. See if that halts the loss and starts to regrow. If that doesn't work, you might want to try Avodart. Like propecia it was initially meant for an enlarged prostate, but they found it works for baldness as well. FDA trials were halted for its treatment of hairloss, but it remains on the market as a prostate treatment. Avodart regrew my hair thicker than it was in highschool and this was after I shaved my head. It was magical. I had relegated myself to the fact I am mostl likely going to be bald forever, but was still experimenting with different treatments.
I read about Avodart on hairsite.com and within weeks, my hairline and all other thinning areas fill in. My hair within 2 months is thicker than it was in highschool. I can't even explain how magical this was. I knew it could be gone the next day, so I lived the next few months like they were my last on earth. I was out at clubs at 3 in the morning on Tuesdays(I live in Vegas), on 3 dating sites at once. Oh how I remember those special special days
And then one morning the itch came back. I doubled my dosage and that worked for a few weeks, the stopped. So I tripled the dosage, and that worked for a week. And then I felt like such hell from the amount of Avodart I was taking, that I could barely get up in the morning. I threw in the towel, shaved my little head, and I was back to bald me. Girls I had been seeing, just wanted to be friends all of a sudden. I was not happy. Life goes on.

If your ready to accept what it most likely inevitable, cut it real short or shave it. Save yourself the anguish of the game and move on. It helps to keep some color, and nstay in shape. Facial hair and glasses help as well. Your like a walking Mr potato head- might as well have some fun.
