Went to Pittsburgh today to see a 1985 black Euro 308 and fell in love. This car has the best sounding exhaust i've ever listened to. The place (exoticars) has a great reputation and a search on this forum shows only great comments.

They advertise a 7k major was performed on the car by them (guiseppe) and that the car checks out great. I wanted a reciept for the service as they don't really have many documents on the car and the carfax only shows their purchase from the previous owner. Said they'd have to get the service guy to print one and that he wasn't in today. The salesman was really nice but new to selling and didn't know about the euro certification but says they have the title in PA and it isn't an issue

They believe the car to have 16k miles on it as the odometer reads this. The driver seat has some distorted seams like it's been sat in alot and the center console shows some wear indicative of more miles than the odometer reads. Also it looks like the seat hinge has some rust in it.

What i'm wondering is if i should pay them to do the leakdown and overall PPI
since i don't know of another dealer in the area or should i take the recent 7k service (provided they come up with a reciept) as a PPI? Or is it just plain silly do do a PPI from the place that's selling the car good rep. or not

They're asking 39k but before i try to bargain i wanna know the cars worth bargaining for.
Here's the link to the seat pic. Rust and warped seam can all be seen in pic.

Well, normally I would not have the dealer that I'm buying the car from do my PPI. Picture this, I'm going to sell you a car and then I'm going to do a PPI on it and tell you everything is fine. Is there a conflict of interest there? If you believe the dealer, then buy the car. Personally, I wouldn't spend the money to have the dealer certify a car that he is going to sell. I'd look at the car and see what up with it. Are there any cracks in the frame? Are the wheels straight? Does it start and run good? What does the oil look and smell like? Check out all the electrics. Do all of the guages work. Check out the heating and AC system to see if it works. Those are the kinds of things that you can look at with out tearing the car apart to see what's what with the car.

Somewhere on this list there's a check list to use to check out buying a car. Find that and follow it.

    Good luck,

    Bob Wassam

It's easy to fall in love with these cars, but...

    don't.

It says 23K in the ad (?) There looks to be rust on the seat hinge and tracks - suggests the car sat out in the rain with the top off, or leaked badly. The seat cover may have been replaced and poorly fitted.

No service history? They didn't bother to print out a receipt for $7000 worth of work? (!?) And now you would pay them another $500 or so to inspect the car they did the work on? (hmm)

No pics of the engine bay - how did that look?

All these photos are tiny, can't tell anything from them.

Proceed with extreme caution. Actually, I'd say proceed over to Philly and buy that gorgeous red 308 Algar has in their showroom. I've noticed there are almost no nice 308s or 328s for sale right now at the dealers or highline used exotics dealers, but be patient. (Easier said than done, I know...)

Good point on the 7k and no proof thing.

The salesman was new and the main mechanic wasn't in. The engine looked fantastic though.

I'd kinda thought the top off thing to be the case too as the roof didn't show any stains on the fabric.

Yeah, not fallin' in love is my first rule when buying stocks and the one i preach most often. Same rule should apply here too.

She just caught me off guard though..never seen the right one in Black until now...

That QV at Algar has a 55k asking price

Black is the prettiest color, hands down. But red is usually easier for resale.

It's high, but $50K-ish isn't out of line for a top-tier 308 QV with a good history/records. There just aren't that many left, and that's the best one for sale right now.

One with rusty seat hinges can be had for less... ;)

I'd at least wait to talk with someone who has a clue. It doesn't hurt to look at a few cars before you buy, especially if they're local.

Other places to keep an eye on for 308/328s are Forza Motorsports in CT, Sport Auto in NC and Motorcars in MO.

I've been looking at cars as i travel for work.

I send pics to my girlfriend of all the cars i see. She usually sends a text message like "looks nice honey" or "did u like it?" When i sent the pics. of this the first black one she kept defending the car no matter what concerns i had about it. I was like WTF? why is she taking and interest in this one? Then i sent her a text message saying "are u telling me u like black?" The response was a big smiley face followed by "what's not to like?"

Headin' to Atlanta next and got two i wanna see there.

The car in Black really has me thinking though.

climb: If you want to pursue it, you could ask this place if they will do a PPI on the 308 at Exoticars:
Auto Palace Sales & Service Inc.
    4627 Baum Boulevard
    Pittsburgh, PA 15213
    (412) 687-4002

You could also try a post in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

I bought my black 308 at Exoticars and am one of those who has provided some favorable comment on them here at FChat, but in good conscience I couldn’t advise anybody to buy a car without a PPI. I’d be glad to help you out but I really don’t have enough mechanical or Ferrari knowledge to give you a meaningful inspection.

This is an off the cuff observation from merely looking at the pics provided of the interior.......I'd say that without a doubt the mileage as represented is incorrect.

I am not saying that the dealer is deliberately or unwittingly misrepresenting the vehicle though......just that the mileage as shown on the odometer is what is being quoted in the add......and IMHO it is probably higher.

It is easy to drop $20K into a used 308. A PPI is your only defense against it. Regarding using the selling dealer to do the PPI, it reminds me of an old friend that used his wife's attorney to represent him in their divorce. He figured it would save him some money. I'm sure you can guess the outcome of that piece of logic…..

John thanks for the info..Good to know if i decide i can't live without this thing. I like the whip your rollin' too. Black has new meaning to me now.

I agree on the higher than odometer reads mileage and at this price i'd expect some pics of the service or at least a call from the mechanic describing in detail the work done etc. Why no pics? *scratches head*

If this was a 24k driver i'd take the chance but it isn't.

Just as i made the previous post i checked e-mail. Salesmen said he had guiseppe(the head Ferrari Mechanic) do a leakdown and compression test.

    Here are the test results,

Compression test (psi): Front bank 150,152,150,154
    Rear bank 150,150,150,155

Leakdown test (%); Front bank 14,12,14,11
    Rear bank 14,14,14,11

Guiseppe remarked that these were very good numbers, excellent mechanical condition.

    Regards,
    Jim

Props to him and the dealership on that, they've done everything they said they do so far..also sent a copy of the receipt but it didn't come through.

Are these numbers good? Is that low number of 11 bad? or the high number of 14. Does that mean that 14% of the pressure they put end leaked? Is this Russia?..this isn't Russia.

I'm not a professional mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but leak down % north of 10 sound horrific. Unless I've misunderstood your numbers, the leak down doesn't look good. Anything above five per cent is the starter's pistol to me. For what it's worth, my 328 showed less than 2% leak down across the board in the PPI I got.
If you're thinking of dropping 45K+ up front, you might want to look at some 328s as well (unless your heart is set on a 308).

    2% huh? I see.

Naw.. 308 is all i want. Started out a few months ago wanting a 355 and now i don't want anything but a 308.

I hear that. Ferraris are all about getting what you want, not what someone else tells you to want. In the end I decided that I wanted the performance and reliability enhancements of the 328 more than the coolness and slightly better looks of the 308.

Yeah, i just did the ole' copy and paste from his numbers in the e-mail.

So the higher the number the worse off it is and 10% or more is getting into dangerous territory.

    Yeah..thanks. I know.

This thing is taking me away from thinking about my work at a time of the year where i need to be.

This place also has a red 85qv that's in the best condition i've ever seen. Don't know what mechanical gremlins it may have.
The car came from the original owner and every reciept is in plastic protectors and in turn in a three ring binder with post-it summaries of the reciept. Only 45k miles too. It's got the compomotive wheels.

For now i'm kinda relieved cuz it'd be tough to pull this thing off during the heavy travel season i go through for work

I also wanted the performance improvements of the 328, but thought the styling was better than the 308. Just didn't link the black front and rear bumper. Personal likes and dislikes facter into what you get. So get what you like and want, not what someone else thinks you should have.

That's the one you want to consider. Keeping a "binder" on a car is a huge positive flag that generally indicates the owner cared for the car. Make sure it shifts well!

    I know... it's sweet.

The wheels give the car the wrong stance IMO.

At that price i don't wanna put replica wheels on a car that had the originals at one time. I didn't check the book enough to know when the belts were last done. Had a repaint too but done well. Car looked fantastic.

The time i had here to look at cars i spent on the Black one.

When i get off the road i may take the time to look it over again if it's still available.

I've actually gone back and forth on the looks of the 328 vs the 308 (various incarnations) over the years, so it's a slight difference for me. I remember when Road and Track did a 328 vs 308 road test and they had both cars on the cover "racing" on a road with the 328 in front and the QV looking forlorn in the background. At the time, my ten year old self was horrified at the changes to the nose, but it grew on me.

I don't know where you are, but have you looked at
www.cannillomotorsports.com (Long Island) or www.forzamotorsports.com (Connecticut)? These guys sell a bunch of 308s

Thanks i've added them to the favs.

Like the power on the 328 but what decides it for me is the toggle switches and slide levers on the 308.
