Having the money, and spending it are two different things. MotoGP is not going to sell enough tickets, neither is F1, or both combined, to pay for such changes to the facility. Like I said, either this story is not correct, or F1 will be dropped in the future.
I'm all for the Chicago Road course! What do we have to do to start an official campaign to get the F-1 USGP to Chicago? Maybe more reruns of the Blues Brothers police pursuit scenes? Dave
Today on www.speedtv.com the new proposed plan is to run the circuit counter clockwise for Moto GP and F1 in 2008. I'd have to think about that but it looks more and more like there will be F1 in 2008 at Indy.
Last I new, Mr Eclestone was a shareholder in MotoGP... The F1 race costs $$ to have, then all proceeds from TV, etc go to Mr E for redistribution, 1 for you, 1000 for me, etc
Counterclockwise is a good thing in my book: I always thought that it was odd that F1 had to do it the other way round. Why? Just to be different? Heck if I had my way F1 would be running the real 4 turn "oval".
F1 on the oval? Some have in the past. I say yes, remembering the history and tradition that is Indy, and that it has nothing to do with Junior Johnson, moonshine, or NASCAR.
Finally some more visibility into what they're thinking. See http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/57102 Looks like the reversed (again!) track is only for Moto GP, and the changes will probably not affect F1 Turn 13 Image Unavailable, Please Login
The new layout will still allow the use of the banked turn 13 for F1. I can't say that losing the twin hairpins is a big loss, but the banking is huge.
As much as I hate the new Hockenheim to the old one, it wasn't really Tilke who did the damage. Yes, he designed the new track (or half of it), but it was based on what they told him. They took away the essence of Hockenheim by giving the forest back to the state (?). That's what killed off the track. Tilke just tied up what was left. While I'm the first in line to blame Tilke for boring tracks (Sepang, Bahrain, China), he didn't really have much choice in Hockenheim. Similar situation to Imola: When the land is a given, there are only so many ways to lay a track in there.
Agreed. And surprisingly, the new Hockenheim has produced some pretty decent races. But I don't like the new cocktail napkin design for Indy.
I still think they should go back to the old Monza with the huge sloping turns, thats exciting racing.
Did you ever drive it on a computer? Hairpin (turn #2) and the second to last turn's double apex are just plain weird to take. Apart from that it has about three iterations of the same sequence of turns. The stands look nice, but I still don't like the track layout. Maybe it is just me, because I actually happen to love Hungaroring. That to me has the most natural flow of all tracks.
