+1 Overpowered cars is not at the top of my list of road safety issues. Just because someone has a 600bhp Mercedes sedan doesn't mean they are gunning it at every red light.... the real danger on the road are the increasing number of things to distract you from paying attention to the road. A mature driver in a 599GTB is much more safe than a ditz in a minivan talking on her phone, screaming at kids in the backseat, eating a sandwich, and trying to adjust dvd players, navigation systems, and iPods... I also agree with the post that high bhp numbers are important for marketing reasons.
The 07 1000 now puts out 175 RWHP Bone Stock. http://forums.13x.com/showthread.php?t=134879 slight mods put it at 185 RWHP I figure that the motors are putting out at least 200HP per liter at the crank. If so, the cars have alot more potential.
Apparantly, Corvette Engineering has no intent whatsoever to stop the race just yet. Even if they do end up in a terrible legal battle over the inevitable results of putting 650hp and inexperienced drivers into essentially a C6 Z06. I have wondered why they did not take the Porsche/BMW/Mercedes route to kind of distance the conpany itself from the ultimate HP - i.e. tacit support for RUF, AMG, M or Alpine, etc. I guess that the straight gunfight Dodge vs. Chevrolet is too important to marketing. There is, I think, another factor driving the future of this trend. It is simply how many of the high-profile wreckages of million-dollar-+ cars that the public and press will tolerate before this gets branded with a social stigma. Then the insurance, governments, law-enforcement, environmental people make their outcry and the manufacturers will probably react in the usual reactionary way. In a way, I am surprised that Ralph Nader is not already on this one - maybe he really is getting old.
