    Top Law firms in Ontario?

I will be applying to Law schools for Fall08. I was wondering who the top law firms in Ontario, Canada were. I need to find an internship and well even thought it might be a long shot, wanted to get my resumes out there. If anyone knows of any law firms that I can intern with as well i would really appreciate the help! PM me or mail me at [email protected].

    The search begins.

i also have a few questions about law schools in Ontario if anyone can help.

    Welcome to the board.

It's a peculiar first post for someone to make, something that off-topic. As well, with no profile filled out, people will not be sure whether or not they can take you seriously, so it's unlikely you'll get much of a response here, IMO.

A little searching around the internet or your local library should very quickly give you names and contact info of many top law firms in your area (which is.....where, exactly? It's a big province.).

    Best,

    Neil

As a general rule, you won't get a summer job until you have completed at least one year of law school.

Quality of the firm is dependant upon your preferred area of practise and the lifestyle (or lack thereof) you aspire to.

Good luck, Toronto is a very tough market, particularly for the most prestigious Canadian firms. I applied to many with no success.

Ontario has a centralized system (surprise, it's Canada!) which law firms use to hire law interns. You would be more of a paralegal intern though. Google around, there are lists of the top TO firms - try www.findlaw.com or www.infirmation.com

That sounds more like punishment than an internship.

you want an internship - stop wasting your time on this site and go to lawyerchat...law schools must have dropped admission criteria

I go to law school in Ontario (Western).

First of all, relax. Why do you want a law job? You will be doing law the rest of your life...that is if you get in. That should be your main focus.

I didn't even bother getting or looking for a law job after my 1st year of law school because:

    a) no firm wants you - you are essentially worthless and they get nothing from you with your limited legal knowledge (even more so in your case)

    b) no firm cares - when they do begin hiring in your 2nd year, most firms aren't going to care about previous experience. They are interested in your grades and interviewing skill.

    c) It was my last summer to enjoy myself before working for a living. I spent my summer in Quebec with many belle filles...and let me tell you, I wouldn't change that for the best law job out there.

I don't mean to be harsh, but reality needs to kick in here. Like I said RELAX. Focus on getting in to law school with grades this year and next.

Focus on chasing tail for the summer and enjoying yourself. Maybe travel or experience something you may not have the chance to do when you are doing the daily grind.

    Good luck,

    Jordan

You're better off working in a community service organization and studying for the LSAT. Law schools like to see local organizational or social involvement and service. The big thing nowadays is producing conscientious lawyers who get behind causes.

LSAT is the single biggest factor in admissions.

As Ryalex stated and I alluded to, the big thing you need to worry about is an LSAT score and in my opinion and just as importantly your grades.

From what I know, law schools do not care about previous legal experience when selecting applicants. Taking law classes in undergrad can even work to your detriment...they want a wide variety of students from all backgrounds. From what I gather, I am pretty sure I am in law school to learn the law...who would have thought?

You got your head in the wrong place. Like Ryalex said, do some type of community work or something different that will set you apart from other students.

But if you really like working in a law firm despite the fact it won't give you an advantage then its your world...

Just kidding. When I graduated from university in 1984 articling jobs were scarce and the pay was lousy. Not so these days. Jobs a more plentiful and starting salaries are higher. However if you want make big bucks get a trade. A plumber during the holidays makes as much as a brain surgeon.

    Good luck.

Did you try to get some information through LSUC (Law Society of Upper Canada) in Toronto? - They may be able to give you a few pointers. My son used to work there (no, he's not a lawyer...).

Well, so far you've ignored the advice of the other law students and the lawyer.

What did you want to know about law schools?
