don't let's forget about miura... such a car!

even if as Ferrari purist... I think, ferrari is just perfection. Magnificent sculptures whose look and class has always found a great balance in almost every model, without being silly, funny, poshy and so on...

I am proud to be Italian and share my nationality with the Cavallino Rampante one!

To me pretty goes to the bone - not only the sculpture of the body but the craftsmanship and design of every part and how it is designed to do what it does, but yet do it with beauty and grace. Many modern cars lose that purity of beauty once you open a door or engine compartment or look underneath the car.

So in purity of design and for cars where style and craftsmanship go into every piece on the car through and through, the cars of Ettore and Jean Bugatti are far and away the prettiest down to the last mechanical component and elegance in every mechanical detail - with aching attention to detail.

While there are many type 57 that do this (Ventoux, Atalante) in street cars -- for purity in purpose, elegance in design down to the last safety-wired screwhead and perhaps the "prettiest" engine, chassis, components, execition and craftsmanship of all time - the Bugatti Type 35 does it all the best ever.

In the more contemporary era, I've seen only a few Alfa Romeos or Mercedes approach this level. Simply due to design requirements and economic realities, no modern car can really even come close to the freedom earlier designers had.

just as an alternative to all the high dollar cars....

for high volumn cars that sold for not much money....

    thirties fiat 500 topolino
53 studebaker lowey designed coupe and hardtop
    33 ford roadster

and for a porsche, how could nobody have mentioned the 550 spyder?
or its little brother the bmw 600 racer with similar lines?

and for indy cars, how about
the maser 8c(something) which wilbur shaw nearly won four with?

    and for f1, how about
dan gurney's eagle which he won with?

its like asking which of your children is the prettiest....

when i was young and knew of many less cars i could just say in a heartbeat...the 65 289 cobra.

fun to look at all the pictures. a great thread.

    thanks to everybody.

Poor man's Ferrari (I always loved the 68-73 Corvette body style)
It was my first car, as I dreamed about having a Ferrari someday.
32 years later I now have that Ferrari.

That is such a pretty car. If those W196R's are street legal, I would definitely drive one on the streets. Only on a sunny day of course. No roof and lights! :)

    I 100% agree Russ.
I am drawn to the art deco period because of this.

    Prettiest.

    Pretty.....

    ...not the word "beautiful"
    ...not "incredible"
...not "desirable," nor "attractive," nor "passionate," nor "elegant,"

though it might be any or all of those as well.

The word implies a sense of feminity.

For me, no car with aerodynamic devices need apply, that's about as pretty as cuisinart.
Cars with "haunches," the slightly squared rear fenderline that projects above the rear trunk deck like an animal ready to kill, would not qualify. Who wants to be stabbed in the night by your lover?
Cars with power bulges are as "pretty" as a female bodybuilder, i.e. not (at least to me.) The same goes for scoops or vents.
In fact, I couldn't even consider any car that looks "purposeful" for the honor being considered here, as a purposeful woman conjurs the image of a fishwife, even if she could clean a house twice as fast as any competitor.

No, the prettiest car I have ever seen reminds me of a shapely woman in an elegant ballgown, and the original poster nailed it as his first mentioned car. The 1939 Delahaye 165 Cabriolet, bodied by Figoni et Falaschi. People in Phoenix can see if for two more days at the Phoenix Art Museum.

that rolls is a one off. it was featured in one of the english magazines recently. it was owned originally by a famous person, either royalty or an actress, iirc.

it is known as the round door rolls, iirc.

it looks stunning with the door open.
