Wow!!! I can't wait to hear it!!! What did you do about the secondary exhaust path from the headers?? Your on!!!!
As you can see I installed a factory Euro 355 rear bumper, as well as a front to match, left the door vents factory 348. I like the rear oval vents not painted black. Also, I had the engine lid painted silver to eliminate the black area, the rear part of the lid was not painted. I put on the 348GTB emblem, it just look better with the script all in a straight line. I also removed the black mesh screen under the rear lid louvers. cleaner look and way easier to clean the louvers now. The TPS sensors clear the drip tray by 1/2 inch, so I left the tray on. That is a very good looking car. Though I would recommend removing the side strakes for 'proper' apearance and cooling .
Beautiful, tasteful, and effective mods! Any stock vehicle is just a good place to start. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Stunning look. Love the license plate, ovalish tailpipe tips, paint color, and look of the engine through the vents with the grid removed.
WOWIE Zowie!!! I got to see that in person! I got to HEAR that in person! Take it on the road, brother!
Guys, this thread is really a great read. Group77racing, thanks for posting your modifications on here. This really makes me want to get a 348 even though the engine out service is a real downer for me. It's the mod factor, and rawness that does it for me. I do have to say that it seems like some of the guys are reinventing the wheel here though. Sportbike manufactures have been doing tons of experiments with injection, throttle body, intake flow/ram air, adjustable cam mods for decades and I think if some of the guys here knew about it a lot of time could have been saved on their own mods. This is just my opinion though. I'm not here to bash anyone. I just think that if these manufacturers are getting 160hp out of 1 litre naturally aspirated then there a lot of things that can be learned from that. Group77 went about this mod the right way by basically stating that a 348 motor is basically two 1.7 4 cylinder engines in the same block, and that 210hp or so from 1.7 litre 4 cylinder engine is doable without forced induction. I'd love to see the dyno numbers, and if you get 450hp out of this mod I can see a lot of angry 355 owners out there, and maybe a lot of modded 348 on the road in the future. I guess one problem for this mod would be emissions testing, so maybe not too many would get modded.
This is one 355 owner that won't be angry.....just means the 355 can produce good numbers also... with the right mods
Hi Dave......I was wondering what was the determining factor that made you go with the 30# injectors?? Any thoughts concerning individual coil packs at the spark plug....like the 360/430 setup? Thanks Bruce
+1 The 355 is definately 'as' capable as the 348 for mods. We will just be dealing with a tiny bit more plumbing reduction!!.
Good to see your enthusiasm, but overall an odd view to harbor. 348 Competizione LM's made as much as 550hp naturally aspirated (2nd fastest at Le Mans 1994), so the limits of the engine have been well known for more than a decade. Nor would that make 355 owners "mad." 355's made more hp than most 348's, but clearly made less than some 348's from day one. No one got mad about it. 348's are also very clean burning engines...if you want to pass emissions even with a modded 348, you can. Should the engine out service freak you out? No. It takes about 9 hours of your time to manually unbolt the sub-frame to pull the engine. You don't even need an engine hoist, just 2 floor jacks and simple hand tools. What's going on with the 348 tuning that you are reading about is a quest for *cheap* power. We already know that 348's can make 550hp, but how much can they make with the fewest, simplest modifications? Pap348 has documented +18rwhp from an exhaust mod, for instance. Plugzit paid a grand for individual throttle bodies. Group77 welded his own intake plenum and cored out the OEM 90 degree fuel fitting turn to improve flow to his larger injectors. FatBillyBob runs N2O. Well, over time you are going to see budget mods taking 348's above 400hp. Each approach is a little different, but they are all going in the same direction: budget power. It's not about throwing a magnesium gearbox at the problem (i.e. expensive way to save weight to improve power-to-weight ratio). This is more of a mental challenge. Where did Ferrari leave the cheapest hp on the table? It's the job of the 348 Brotherhood to find out that answer.
Using the injector sizing formula based on a few inputs, 30lb/hr rated at 43psi fuel pressure would support 450 hp at the crank with 80% duty cycle and .48 BSFC. However, 348's have 3.8bar (55psi) furel pressure regulators, thus supporting 480 hp at the crank, or 240hp per 1.7liters.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRReat....perfect....did you put in a new adjustable fuel press reg? Any thoughts on the individual coil pak plug set-up???? Thanks
A 348 without cats isn't going to pass emissions in most states. If part of the mod is to be running a straight exhaust, then the mod is illegal in most states if it's going to be used as a daily driver. Now if incorporating cats into the mod doesn't reduce power that much and you can still get power into the 400's, well then there's a bigger advantage. Nitrous is just a (although a huge one) temporary power increase. For me, any car where you have to pull the engine to change the drive belts is just not worth it, unless the car has a certain characteristic. I drive what I have, and knowing that I'd have to spend a lot of time and money on just a belt service every two years because of the miles I would put on it is a pain in the az to me. The reason I said that 355 owners would be mad is because the 348 is basically the same car, but if you could make 348 pump out 425 hp with a basic intake/exhaust mod the 348 would be a more desirable car for THOUSANDS less, AND without the exhaust manifold cracks and valve guide problems and dash shrinkage problems the 355's experience. Even with the valve guides getting repaired on the early 355's it doesn't mean that the problem with those cars has been fixed. I was also told that some higher mileage 355s have been running into serious problems and that the 348's have been holding up rather well. When I say mad, it's not like I'm saying all hell is going to brake loose with 355 owners. I would just say maybe a little dissapointment, that's all. I mean if I payed 20-40k premium for basically an easily modded 348 (which a 355 basically is), I'd be dissapointed. Is the 355 that much better of a car, if the 348 has the same horsepower? I guess to the people that need power steering yes, but to the die hard drivers? Maybe some don't like the cheese grater styling, but then some think the 355 styling is too bland. What makes me like the 348 more, is the fact that brotherhood IS proving that this car can be easily modified. To me, that's great! In a lot of peoples/critics eyes the 348 is the bastard Ferrari. The brotherhood is going to wind up making those people eat their words, or change their minds.
Well, that's pretty much the point (except that we're cheating a bit because Michelotto already showed that we can get 550hp out of the naturally aspirated 348 engine). 348's are getting long lives with high miles out of our engines. People easily drive 348's farther than 355's/360's, and there's a lot less to go wrong with a 348 (e.g. no air bags, no power steering, no power shocks, no power convertible top, no valve guide problems, no exhaust header problems, no power seats). We're just making them a bit faster than stock.
Front bumper/rear bumper/side rocker panels 348=355 mounting points and 360=430 mount points so far as I can tell.
You've got to pay to play to drive the 355 (which is why I suspect so few of them are driven as they should). You get more, but it's not for free.
