Why is there a golf tee in my engine bay?

    So I found this while working on my plug wires on the 328. Obviously somebody plugged a vacuum line in the past -- but why? I'm off to the parts diagrams, but a hint would be appreciated.

    It's one of those early defective wooden valves. I would replace with the upgraded metal part, if I were you.

    I'd play a 9 iron from there, or maybe take a drop.

    Beats a threaded bolt that kind of chafes (spelling?) the inside of the rubber.

    I have done it. Especially with fuel lines on my Harley. Have a few in my garage for just these occasions :). And I don't golf!

    There is a vacuum routing diagram under the hood. You should be able to figure it out from that.

    I would assume that's where they marked the ball. It would either be an unplayable lie which you would get a free drop or it would be a manmade hazzard which is a free lift. I would not play the 9 iron , there is to much risk in damaging the club.

    Golf Tees were so widely used by mechanics for plugging vacuum lines during tuning diagnosing etc Motorcraft used to include them in their tune up kits years ago. I probably have ten or twenty in my tool box.

    And I thought I was the only dinosaur that still used golf tees for vacuum line plugs. I do try to remember to take them out though.

    I'm just guessing here but I think that vac line is connected on the left side of the intake manifold that goes to the Digiplex.

    At a guess: Air injection system (TAV 10) removed when the cat was gutted?

    Reach under the dash of those older cars, and you'll see why installers keep lots of band-aids at hand. ;)

    Look at the off-white domed valve in the background of your picture. There's a vacuum line that leads into the top aspect.

    Microplex advance vacuum line to port side of plenum, or the vacuum line to the off white emissions valve already mentioned.

    Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize there was a hose routing diagram underneath. Unfortunately, this isn't on the diagram

    And we have a winner. Looking at the parts manual, it seems this is part of the air injection system.

    I've been working on the electrical, so I'll leave this alone at the moment -- first rule of troubleshooting, don't change 2 things at once. Once I get this other sorted, I'll reattach the vacuum hose and see what happens. I suspect that valve is bad and therefore bypassed.
