My Dino is only a few away from Jimmy's (00542). All of the doors and lids are aluminum. I was about to buy a 512 but think I'm going to save up for a 365BB for similar reasons. Maybe I'm Japanese and was separated from my parents at birth!?

    Cheers...Keith

After all the great advice and feedback, I decided I was never going to get a definitive answer -- even from a PPI -- about any "latent defects" in the car. With under 12k miles on it, a lot of the usual wear issues haven't come around yet. So, I got in touch with the previous owner, a MAJOR Southern California surgeon, and the garage that sold it to him, maintained it, and bought it back from him. He put about 400 miles on it in 4 years. They both said it was a virtually perfect car, no mechanical issues, one minor cosmetic flaw (a scratch that was lightly resprayed), and had been run a bit on a regular basis by the garage to keep everything reasonably fit.

The guy at the garage told me that when he bought it from the doctor last fall, a bunch of people came and inspected it, and it turned out I knew one of the dealers through a friend. I spoke to him, and he said the car was great, and he had offered full price, but the doc gave it to his loyal local. Said it was one of the nicest -- or probably the nicest -- Dinos he'd ever seen. This while he has an identical car to sell me! Pretty decent to be so honest -- may have cost him a sale!

The final closer was the seller agreed -- in writing -- that if the mechanic in the Bay area who is going to change all the hoses and belts before it gets shipped to me can find anything the car needs that will cost more than $2500, he'll pay for it. Might be hard to enforce, but I've got LOTS of lawyer friends out there....

Sent the check, got a faxed bill of sale, waiting for originals. Looks like I'm a Dino owner!

As to the question of GT vs. GTS, and flares, I think the joy of open motoring far outweighs a very slight aesthetic preference. The flares do a lot to widen and lower the visual stance of the car, giving those exquisite haunches a sense of coiled power. I'm thinking Marion Jones in the starting blocks. I'm also way too old and have too many kids to race other cars on mountain roads, so the Dino will be plenty fast for me!

Congrat ! This is the start of a wonderful relationship. As for the Tipo L inquiry, ...yes the car is lighter, more aluminum panels, and a bit more HP than the US versions, etc. What I like most is the fact that in total only 350 or so L Types were made and the hand made "imperfection" quality of it. As for the 365BB, ...those clean, simple lines and profile, no bulky spoiler lips, triple tail lights and triple exhausts, and best of all the visible manifolds from the rear is like a gorgeous girl w/ a perfect behind in a mini skirt. I like the way you think!

When I bought my Dino, I researched for quite awhile. I got a PPI on a car and took a day off work to fly up and inspect her in person. This was back in 1998. I took her for a test drive and after a bit of haggling, remember when you could do that?, I bought the car. Now this car had sat for a number of years and the dealer replaced hoses and fuel lines. I decided to drive back to LA from Los Gatos, about 6 hours. In a car I don't know much about. Just reading everything I could get my hands on. I was quickly introduced to the fuel starvation problem when I exited to a service station. It was a long sweeping exit and the car died mid-curve. She started right away but my memory flashed back to all the articles that mentioned about this issue and I had a huge grin on my face.

It was a beautiful day and I had the top off. Everything was going beautifully until I got to Malibu. I noticed white smoke in the rear view. And there was traffic ahead. I started saying things like "come on baby, just a little more". I got 10 minutes from my house when the car died. The head gasket had blown and I had my first big Dino repair bill. But I still had a huge grin on my face.

    Welcome to the club.

Congratulations - hoses and belts are the rubber bits that would concern me with an older, low mileage car and you've got that covered.

    Now, the driving fun starts!

A real chairs and flares GTS, in good/great condition, is like ocean-front property. Location...location...location. It may not go up much in value (if the market has topped out at this point), but it will not depreciate either. It likely will climb. There simply are not many like this.

Money is not spent on these items. It is transferred from one asset to another. Hence, barring appropriate insurance coverage, one will not lose the money. Worse case...perhaps a few percentage points down, which will equate to the pleasure-factor. More likely you will be paid for your enjoyment (with rise in equity value).

Now, how important is that PPI? What if the PPI came back and said it had low compression on cylinder #4? Heck, I won't go there.

Congratulations. Great car. Smart choice. We are all jealous.

Congrats. You would have been an idiot to let it go. Your Dino will bring you satisfaction standing still and in motion. Enjoy!
