Racing under lights ...

i won't mind the Malaysian GP at nite, personally. but i have to wake up next day for work and that sucks. but it'll be helluva lot cooler in the nite at Malaysia. plus, those glowing disc brakes could be a sight

 

If the races were on Saturday night it would be fine.
I last year went to the ALMS races in Portland, OR. They were on Saturday afternoon, and let me tell you it was nice to have one more day off after spending the whole day at the track.

 

I think it would be cool actually. Several years ago, in 94 I think, a CART race in Austaraila went long because of a rain delay and they were running till it got pretty dark out. It looked awesome. Glowing brake discs and flames out of the exaust............

Can you imagine how much money Melbourne is going to loose with very little spectators. They are already struggling, ie. this year they were down I believe 100,000 through the gates.

This idea effectively means no more GP in Australia! ... so I guess you guys can sit back and say 'I'm alright Jack ... thus don't care', but this Bernie only thinking of money had to go.

Also F1 cars are already wasteful enough ... we don't need to make it 100 time worse. We ALL have a responsibility for our environment, even us race nuts.

About the lighting, if, somehow, the whole track couldn't be lit up, it would be interesting to see how all the teams would go about putting lights on the cars...hmmm...




What do you think their going to do with the energy generated by the regenerative braking systems in the future, use it to run the headlights of course!

The cars shouldn't need headlights ... just like football players don't need lights when they play at night .

The track will be flood lit.

If this is pushed forward I can guarantee there will be no Melbourne as the city will backlash big time ... as I would if I lived there!

I can imagine that this might hurt spectator numbers (I can also imagine the opposite), but there is an easy fix: Give the race organizers a piece of the TV rights pie. That's where the money is, not in the tickets sold.

Also I would imagine the Australian Tourism bureau has some vital interest to keep the GP. I mean one day I will visit Australia despite the long flight and the costs, but it has to be combined with the GP. Similar thing happens with the USGP where half the spectators are South Americans and Europeans.

Many races in the US are run at night and in front of empty stands: For instance the somewhat famous Rolex race in Florida runs basically for emtpy stands at night.
Melbourne GP qualifying was delayed on Speed TV because they showed some NASCAR style truck race in some oval. Only a handful spectators near the s/f line. Yet that series happily survives.

The problem is the track is in the middle of the city in a park ... night race would not only inconvienence many people, by traffic closures, loosing their park, etc. it will now keep them awake.

It's just not going to fly. Even if this was next to my house (and yes many people live right next to the park in Melbourne) I would be protesting. I have children that need their sleep, etc. ... heck I need my sleep also.

It would be different if it was a race track away from a city, but it isn't.
