I started refinishing the exhaust cover today. Removed it and stripped it. Took about 4 hours to get it off and all the paint stripped. Here is a halfway pic in the middle of the stripping. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dave, From my own experience, don't use a primer when you repaint it. It will break down and cause paint flaking. Use a high temp satin black spray..like rustoleum barbeque paint. A few light coats work best. The heavier the layer of paint, the more likely it will peel..ie more is not better. Good luck.
I have one small spot almost in the center of mine that keeps flaking. Looks like a little rust underneath, so I sand the problem area and spray it with barbeque paint as stated above. It lasts for a while...I guess I redo it about once a year. Any better solutions, other than stripping the paint of the entire cover? I don't have the patients to do that.
Actually, powder coating is not really that much more durable than hi-temp paint, particularly if you run cats. The best solution I have seen (and used) so far is a hi-temp ceramic based coating. In Phoenix, we have a company called JetHot coatings. They have many different finishes including a satin flat black that looks very much like the factory finish. JetHot does coatings for the hi-temp surfaces of many drag racing teams, particularly on the headers. www.jet-hot.com good luck!
I finished mine today and will mount it after it settles a bit. I used a Ceramic High Temp Paint by duplicolor. Says its good for manifolds, so Im thinking its not gonna give me issues. Ill post a pics later on when I get home.
mambodave; any pics after the refresh? Just curious what color you used; flat black, stain etc. There are various theories on the original color, painted, anodized etc... KS
