I need to change oil on my 1999 360 Modena, I looked up the owner's manual and it suggests Shell synthetic oil. Also the oil in the F1 control module needs Shell Donnex TX. I went to several local Shell stations but they only carry the generic oils no synthetic for anything Ferrari. Where is a good site to get the recommended oil for the 360 Modena.

Google and see if either Elf or Pentosin oils are available in your area, they both make high quality fully synthetic oils in 5w40 and other grades. I use Mobil synthetic dexron for the F1 and p/s. Mercedes hydraulic fluid for convertible hydraulics and VW blue antifreeze (also sold under Pentosin branding).

    Use Mobil1 0w40

Best oil on the market right now.

If you want details to why, search "Ali Haaze" (I think I spelled his name right). He did a VERY extensive oil comparison a while back.

Search this site for comments on oil. I think from the comments most believe the alternative products are better than Shell Helix. I personally suggest using Mobile One if your car is out of warranty. If you are is still in warranty, and I can't imagine your 360 is still in warranty, us the Ferrari recommended products (Shell). If you really want Shell Helix you can get it from a Ferrari dealership or shops in your area who service Ferrari.

Motul is an awsome oil if you can find it. I have heard that the newer formulation of Mobile 1 is not as good as the old. Finding the sythetic shell oil is a joke. Even when looking for the Rottela T syth. for my TDI, It was imposible to find even after calling shells head office.

In the states, Rotella T Synthetic is availabe at WalMart in both quarts and gallon jugs. You might check the WalMarts in Ontario.

Buy the TX from the dealer and the helix.

TX is a fully synthetic Trans fluid. Bad things happen to the F1 system if you use the wrong fluid.

As for the engine oil, I would use the helix, but you could always go cheaper with a fully synthetic oil.

Who is "they"? Its not validated by the science. Read the threads on this subject. Further exacerbated by the non-use of most Ferraris inasmuch as the mileage is low, temperatures low, unstressed etc. Any reputable 5-40 synthetic changed at least annually on the requisite annual 2500 mile usage will do just fine.

I have a 1964 Mini Cooper with synthetic, change the oil every 3 years or so and compression checks indicate no changes from 1984 when the engine was rebuilt. I had to do the rebuild despite the fact that I changed the oil every 3000 miles or 6 months, used Castrol GTX only. Mileage is about 4K per year, always has cold or very cold starts, never driven gently and I always buy generic filters.

So most of this oil worry is an indulgence as in jic at least from my experience of 40 odd cars over the last 40 years starting with a 1958 Renault Dauphine.

Another comment for the Rotella T synthetic 5w-40. The base stock is group III, and it is the same base oil Shell uses to formulate Ferrari's formula 1 oil. Shell uses different additives for each track, but it is the same base stock. If it is good enough for Ferrari's F1 engines, it is good enough for everything else IMHO. HTHS is a very high 4.2, and the kinetic viscosity @100C is higher than that of M1's 40 weight although the exact number escapes me at the moment. This information was provided by one of Shell's technician posts on their site.

The only place in Hawaii to find Shell Ultra Helix 5W-40 is the Ferrari dealer in Honolulu. Call 'em for a price--I bet it's megabucks. A good alternative is Pennzoil Platinum European Formula 5W-40. It is virtually the same as the Shell; Pennzoil is owned by SOPUS (Shell Oil Products U.S.) and is considered the corporation's premium brand in the U.S., with Shell (and Quaker State) as lesser brands. That's why Shell Ultra Helix is not marketed in the U.S. Unfortunately, I have not found Pennzoil Platinum in the 5w-40 grade here on the Big Island, but you may have better luck on Oahu.

Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 is a great Heavy Duty Engine Oil (i.e., a diesel oil that is also rated for passenger cars). I use it in my diesel tractor and diesel generator, but I would hesitate to use it in my 328 as long as other suitable oils were available. The Rotella could poison your catalytic converters if you car is burning any oil. With a 360 you probably don't have that problem.

vlamgat has it exactly right in that just about any modern oil will do fine. I'm using Mobil 1 0W-40 which is readily available. Valvoline Synpower and Castrol Syntec 5W-40 are good, as are the various boutique oils such as Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Motul, and Elf. Kind of depends on how much you want to pay and look around.

If you let motor oil become an obsession (as I have done), you might want to have your used oil analyzed by a lab when you change it. This will give you a snapshot of your engine wear and show you how the oil is holding up to your driving style and the environment.

    Aloha, Mark

I agree with this comment. I hear that Shell Rotella T's copper content is a bit higher which is possibly what makes this oil so popular with flat tappet engine owners. The group III base stock in Penzoil's synthetic is the same base stock as that which is used in Rotella T. The numbers are notably better with Rotalla T than the Penzoil synthetic. I feel as if the beefy additives are what these cars need due ot how hard they are driven at times. I would only worry about your cats if you were burning more than a quart of oil every 1k miles. I used this stuff for quite some time in my 911, and burned approx 1 quart every 2k miles with no issues and never any hydrocarbon issue at emissions time.
