Interesting that some of Fchat's most vociferous racing EXPERTS don't claim to have GONE to racing school. Hmmmmm.....

I believe that it is more important to invest in oneself versus spending money on some racing gizmo that may make the car go faster. I also believe that a good professional driver can take a regular 360 around the track much faster than most amateurs could take a 360 CS or 430 or even a 599 perhaps.

I remember when Derek Bell was my instructor driving my 355 F1 GTS around the track... how fast and how smoothe his was. Effortless really. While I was so uptight that you couldn't get a pin up my @SS with a sledgehammer while he was watching me "drive".

Or just try to follow a really good driver on the track in the same car. A very humbling experience I can assure you.

Knowing our own limitations is an important part of life IMHO.

    Really?

I thought just the opposite: Most of the usual suspects have checkedn in here and stated they did racing school and/or racing.

No road racing classes, but I did attend an Evolution AutoX class and have attended a civilian high performance driving course at the East Texas Police Academy.

I don't understand the implied requirement in the original post. Does one have to be able to throw 87 MPH to discuss baseball?

Just armchair, I've played a few racing video games.

The real judge of how many armchairs we have is how many thought Juan's Mexico move was OK. :)

In 85 I went to the Jim Russel school in Canada at Mt. Treblant and since the Canadian GP was cancelled that year I did a 2 and 3 day school. Got to drive the F1 course one of the days.
In 88 at Laguna Seca I did the California Superbike School 1/2 day and full day. In 89 I did the same. Then I went back for a 2 day advanced school,
unfourtionately I on did a day and a half before I had the unpleasent distiction of have the worst crash in Subebike school history. Tip when you travel make sure your wife has credit cards with her in her name.
I cancelled our Amex when my wife had to live in a safe house for battered
wives for almost a month. I was out of it for a months. I saw Amex's ad for cards being replaced lost on vacation, the banks turned my wife away. The hotel was booked so she had to leave.
Gave up my dream of racing after that.

I said at the time, Juan shouldn't have done that. Here's an OT question that I think at least 5 of you can answer. How is the RX8 beating the Porsches this year in Grand Am GT1.

I know it's the 1st full season in Rolex GT. Is it a new rule that bumped them up this year or factory support. They didn't run like that in the past, did they? Exciting ending at Homestead.

I don't know much about it, I was on the phone with Silven a month ago, but it was about my RX8. I just said congrats for the good Daytona run.

This is really first year in GT, the RX8 has less than half the power of the Porsches and Ferraris stock, so they had to do a bunch to get it competitive. Stock an RX8 will brake with those exotics and come close on handling, but only way to get in neighborhood of power is 3 rotors. I think it is all natural power too. Silven has been competitive for decades in club racing and in the minor leagues (GA Cup/Koni), but this is first time in big leagues. They're just a good team with good drivers kicking VW butt. Mainly a privateer effort with $TRONG encouragement from Mazda.

FYI a stock RX8 will only dyno 160-175 at rear wheels.

I've done the 4-day Bondurant class but the best day of instruction I've ever had was just yesterday. Our lead instructor was this guy:

A friend and I did the Bobby Ore Motorsports beginner stunt driving school. Did it help me with racing? No, but I can slide a car sideways into a parking spot with reasonable accuracy and most of all its lots of fun. How many people can say they have been in a car while its on two wheels... on purpose? :)

I used to do that a lot as a kid with my cart. Would be fun to do it with a real car. :)

That's funny because some of the most unexperienced/unknowledgeable Ferrari people are many of the owners I've met!

EDIT: BTW, I did Skippy at Laguna, my "home track" so to speak!
