Someone here last night went into cardiac arrest at one of the frats from drinking too much. Him and someone else were taken to the hospital. I've **heard** (as in RUMOR so i don't actually know) he's still in a coma and the other person is recovering (soon to be released). Needless to say, i'm pretty sure the frat (or all of them) are ****ed. The news people are here and there were a ton of cops earlier. Just another reason i don't drink.

Anyway, just out of curiousity, how much would someone need to drink to go into cardiac arrest? I know it depends on the person but he's about 5'9 and 160 pounds (give or take)

Weird thing is that i saw (i don't actaully know him personally) him at dinner a few hours before.

Apparently he drank a "big bottle of vodka" (a handle i'm guessing...) as part of hazing.

He is on life support, has brain damage from not breathing and is in a coma. His big could be in a lot of trouble...

His BAC was way over 0.4%. Probably at least 0.5%, if not approaching 0.6%. Thing is, most people pass out/go unresponsive above 0.4%, but he probably drank enough before that which hadn't been entirely absorbed into the blood. So as he was unconscious, he was still getting drunker and drunker.

Sad. I'm in a fraternity, and I just shake my head anytime something like this happens. Forced drinking is one of the most retarded things. I don't drink, and thankfully the brothers in my fraternity had (at the least) the common sense and the respect for me to not make me drink. I guess that's why I liked the guys.

    Edit - Fixed a typo.

I don't know the BAC to do the damage. People do die form this stuff and it is a waste.

Alcohol is an anesthetic and its effects are as if you were "going under" during surgery. If either is administered incorrectly and in high enough doses it will dangerously slow brain, pulmonary and cardiac function. To "sort of" answer your question it is not how much alcohol was ingested persae but how much in a relatively short amount of time. As noted above one may pass out before the full effects of the alcohol have taken place. Like I tell my kids be a leader not a follower.

I have a friend who went to Tulane, and for rush week, he went on a bus that one of the frats had hired, that just went from bar to bar. And this kid is a big drinker as it is, let alone being in New Orleans, during rush week.... Long story short he ended up in the hospital that night with a BAC of .56

That was a phone call that none of us wanted to get. It was a close call

I had a friend in the hospital last weekend with .37. There was a pledge at a frat last year that died with a .45 as well as another pledge from a fraternity this year that fell off a balcony with a bac over .4 some of the frats are pretty retarded as well as some of the kids in general.

    The kid died :(

I didn't even know him that well but he was at my orientation and i saw him that night at dinner so its a little weird. I haven't known many people who have died

Needless to say, the college is in big trouble, as is the frat, as are the brothers involved

    Wow, that's heavy.

When I was a pledge we would get forced to drink but never during a formal event. It'd be when there was a party at the house. I also went to a University that was so anti-greeklife it was a joke. One slip up and the house was bulldozed the next day, so the line was observed quite closely.

At the risk of bringing the wrath of the site upon myself, as I am wont to do. Apropos this thread, please indulge me by doing two things, all you Mensa college students.

    1. Click "spell check" so we can read your posts.
    2. Watch the first scene in the film, "Forest Gump" (sic), and , I quote, "stupid does as stupid is."

Whatever the threshold for alcoholic cardiac arrest, it is normative, not objective; and, you don't need or want to go there, ever! Live long and prosper, with best regards.

It'll most likely be national news soon :(

While i think it was partly the fault of the frat, the kid didn't have to drink it. Yes, i know its hard to walk away when you're with your friends and pledge brothers but some responsibility must fall on him.

First, it's always horrible to hear this type of story, may he RIP. But second, unless someone literally has a gun to your head, you do not have to drink like that, peer pressure, your friends and their stupid frat be damned.

That's why I dropped, frats aren't that cool. It was a solid way to get networked with ass but that's about it. The things they try and put you through mentally are just stupid, and 95% of the time its from guys who you would never hang out with normally.

And granat, I hope my grammar and spelling is okay even though I am not one. But I did go to "collige" once upon a time.
