I can't even tell you how many pictures I have of friends partying, infact that's about all I have as a memory of college.

Anything over .4 and possibly .3 for some people is enough to put you in a coma. If you surpass .5 you're pretty much gone.

Hazing and forcing someone to drink well past their capacity is pretty stupid. I know I've had some really rough nights, some I'd like to forget (if I didn't black out), but anything that requires hospitalization is nuts.

It's a shame that kid died, but you can't really have too much pity for him. It was pretty much suicide. Hopefully others will learn from this situation.

    Ditto.

Even still, at the age of 23, most of the pictures I have with friends are at restaurants, bars, or nightclubs where everyone is drinking and partying. I suppose part of the reason is because we're celebrating and that's why I have my camera with me in the first place.

College is not 100% about partying, but it is a HUGE part of it. For most, it's the first time they're on their own. Moving out, getting a dorm/apt, and being responsible for one's self. I'll be the first one to admit that when I moved away from home and lived on my own at 18 I was not responsible. School was secondary, as it is for many college students, and partying was the most important thing. Looking back I do not wish I would've done things differently, I learned from my mistakes and they've made me who I am today. I know that I wasn't ready for school though. Once I moved back to Orlando a year later and got my own apartment I still wasn't. It wasn't until my 3rd year of school that I really got serious and my grades soared. Fortunately for some they don't need to party and already have their priorities in order, but I, along with most of my friends, did not. Live and learn! :)

    Wow, that was pretty sh!tty.

The difference between this kid and thousands of others is luck, that's it. He made a poor choice, but I'd all but guarantee you, me and the vast majority of people here have done similar things with different consequences. Calling what he did suicide is one of the dumbest things I believe that I've ever read on this forum. It was a cheap shot and shows a total lack of class.

See! You keep making so much sense! He simply could not see beyond the moment. Somewhere, somehow, some older person failed to give him counsel. That person will never forgive him(her)self. Very sad.

Steph, suicide requires the INTENTION of the individual to kill themself. Unless the kid drank paint thinner or draino I would hardly call it suicide.

The whole situation is quite sad. Unfortunately, the people that he needed to help him the most likely encouraged him to press on.

That same scene will play out hundreds of times again, this weekend alone. The difference between the next guy/girl making the news and having a horrible hangover the next morning will be luck. Very sad indeed.

I thought that comment might raise an eyebrow or two, but the fact of the matter is, that kid drank himself to death. Although it was unintentional, he knew that much alcohol was not healthy.

I don't know, maybe I'm alone in this, but no matter how many times I've been completely out of my mind drunk, I always stop drinking. I assume the frat brothers insisted that he keep drinking, which he (in drunken state of mind) chose to do, which resulted in his death. I do agree that there should've been someone there to stop him. His death is in his hands as well as the fraternity's. For that, I do not show much pity, sorry.

Your sorrow is accepted. Now, For all those times you admit to being drunk out of your mind- If I suggested you jump off a bridge; would you do it? Do we really have to quote the first scene of "Forest Gump" one more Time? I remain sad and sorry for everyone who will keep on doing those foolish things, and all those older and not so wiser folks who were afraid to counsel and warn their precious children whom they doomed themselves to lose.

    ...and he never will now.

Those other frat brothers are partially liable for his passing, no doubt.

True, you're not likely to take pics of your friends and self while you're studying. I just found it bitterly ironic that the 'in memory of' montage depicted him doing exactly what it was that killed him.

Some good may come from this, though. If some of these kids see what happened and realize that they are not indestuctible as they once thought, maybe some will think better of these types of activities. One can only hope.

Every time this happens, every year, someone screams to ban this or that.

    Please.

People die on motorcycles, they die in boating accidents, they die in a lot of ways.

So to ban the whole social structure because of a rare death is nannying at its worse.

Maybe educate, publicize and offer alternatives to this behavior but don't start banning an important part of college life.

    we're such a nation of p***ies.

I'm assuming you mean alcohol as "an important part of college life" and not hazing?
