    Just purchased a 1999 550-Its a original stock car-
I want to change the exhaust
I see lots of posts about Tubi-Had one on my 355-nice sound but expensive
What about Xoust,Hyperflow,Capristo? I am also very close distance to Fabiani-I see some notes about him wanting to do something witha 550
I had his exhaust ona Boxster S and was impressed
What about swapping cats or using x-pipe
Just looking for some help as there seems to be alot of options
I will use the car as a semi-daily driver-weather permitting
    Thanks

I have always liked Capristo on my cars. Just like Tubi though, not cheap.

Tubis are great, i have them on my F40, 360 spider and 550 maranello. Go for it, it makes a huge difference in the way the car sounds to those outside listening to it.

Cargraphic/Fuchs without the X-pipe is perfect. With the X pipe it's perfectly LOUDER! :)

    Tubi's drone.

I have a set of 550/575 X-OST take-offs that I would love to get rid of, at an aggressive price. They rolled about 50 miles on a test car. PM me if you're interested.

Hi there, just my personal but I think this boils down to one of two scenarios, either trusting other's experiences or hearing it for yourself. Alas the opportunities to hear it for yourself are limited on these but if you can it is by far the way to go, or even agree with the folks fitting it maybe that if you hate it then it comes off...!?! The prob on the 550 which in my humble experience is very different to the 355 is that most if not all the exhausts suffer in some way from resonance probs. The early Tubi's apparently were terrible, later one's cured it a fair bit but then have read posts from folks saying that it sounds a bit better low down but then little difference above to stock.

Like yourself when I got my 550, after having a tubi'd 355 it sounded most non v12 ferrari. You want it to sound quality, not rattle the neighbours fillings and personally not sound like a screaming 355 which is a very different car but at the same time give the 550 some balls! The problem is that if you ever take the rear boxes off the 550 and the centre section you'll realise that there is a hell of a lot of muffling going on, they weigh a ton and they're there for a reason. I went for X Ost rears as i got a great price and as you say opinions vary so much it's hard to differentiate, tubi's are nice but quite a bit more, Capristo even more so I think.

For the most part the X Ost is good, it's sounds a lot more grumbly and aggresive at idle, cruising at 60 and above is fine but you still get cabin drone in the 1400-1900 rev range. Above that no real probs. I don't use my car everyday, if I did or even remotely near that I might take them off. That said, combination of wanting to improve the situation further and also free some horses, I'm going to put a silenced X pipe in from ferrarifixer as everyone says it greatly improves the sound higher up, increases power and reduces the resonance issues these things face...if it works then it truly will be a nice magic wand.

So I think the crux personally on all these exhausts is if you spend a lot of time at 30, 40 or 50mph speeds then you will likely end up driving around the annoying rev range as at those speeds you will likely normally sit in 4th, 5th or 6th if pottering, which puts you right in the 1400-2000rpm annoyance band, which on a daily or semi-daily driver might get on your nerves!! I stress might, and as said test drive is king as everyone is different and so is what is acceptable. I think though as an example ask most folks about early tubi's and they say horrible, the prob to me is that the car is inherently prone to drone probs if the marriage isn't just right, whereas I think on say a 355 you can put pretty much what you like on and it's often just a matter of opinion which sounds better, the reality is they nearly all sound wonderful it's just degrees of measurement. The 550 can sound better than stock for sure but be wary of the cabin drone at low revs that some of the exhause changes can create if you spend a lot of time inbetween 1400-2000rpm imho.

Hope this helps and gladly let you know re the xost and x pipe combo in a couple of weeks when I get this organised if that helps. Ooh, I should add, my X Osts are the non valve type one's, I believe they have or are just going to release one's with bypass valves similar to stock mufflers, I think the Capristo's can have these with or without valves but for me even if this was available when I got mine I would still probably save the dosh and put it towards and X Pipe instead.

    All the best

    Jon

I have Capristo and it sounds amazing.

Where in the country are you?

You may want to fill out your profile, perhaps someone will let you hear theirs.

Do you guys know about this company? I am not trying to be nationalist, but they are Japanese, and they are quite famous here in Japan. They make the exhaust sound higher. They do really sound nice. =)

They have sound clips, so go to

If you are close to Fabspeed that means you are close to some other Fchatters! Joe Macchione is up in that area, and many more are scattered south all the way to DE. There are also some below the mason dixon line, but we don't like to talk about those hooligans. Check out the local section (Mid-Atl) for info about runs and get togethers.

As for exhaust, Fabspeed WAS going to do our 550 as a test car. The guy I was talking to there is now gone, so I don't know-- it's up in the air.

I heard Tubi on a TDF 550 at Radnor Hunt last year, and it was really nice, but not too knee-weakening. It seems as though X-OST is the way to go. Congrats on the car, and the exhaust! Where did you get your car?

I replaced the mid muffler on my 456 with two straight pipes. Before throwing away loads of money, you should try this before doing anything else.
The costs are almost nil, and the effect is very rewarding.

As a matter of of fact, I opened the mid muffler that is longer longer in use, and found that between the two perforated tubes inside the muffler, there is nothing but air.
So in fact the Ferrari mid muffler does communicate between the left and right cylinder bank, just like an X-pipe.
Sometime ago I believe it was Stevens, who showed a Dyno diagram with an X-pipe and with straight pipes.
The straight pipes produced almost 20 HP more.
Is this the reason why the 575 has straight pipes?
