My waterpump /alternator belt burned up on my '84 QV. I have a spare in the tool kit that came with the car but the part# on the spare is Gates 7M 1000 and I think it's suposed to be a 7M 975. Anyone know what the differenc is?
7M975 is for the carbed 308 & 7M1000 is for the injected 308 (that use the early combination water pump + alternator v-belt arrangement as shown in the thread Tommy referenced). They are only different by 25 mm in length, but, if you have the early style 308QV belt layout with the combined wp + alt belt, I believe 7M1000 is the correct stock belt.
thanks much you guys. This helped. I was going to put the one included in the tool kit on and I wanted to replace it with the correct part.
No trouble, but v-belts don't "burn up" by themselves -- have you confirmed that the wp and alt shafts rotate smoothly and easily by hand?
yeah they move freely. Over the last couple months the belt would squeal when i first started the car , but eventualy it would go away. I decided to drive it to work the other day and, as it has been doing, it started to squeal. I revved the engine to make the squeal go away, and away it did......along with the belt.......
That's how it happens. Now you will have to take a screwdriver and chisel away the melted/hardened rubber off the pullies. Ask me how I know...
Below I have enclosed a copy of Gates Belts reply to my question concerning my 83 308QV belts. I wanted to find these belts locally no matter where I lost one. They have included the Standard sizes to help find these at your local, back alley auto parts store where if you give them a metric size they look at you funny. They can be purchased for around 30 dollars instead of 75. "Philip; Gates offers the part numbers you quoted in part on the Industrial side of the business. Gates Auto. An update on the 308 belt woes. I found the KR-2 Tensionometer at Napa. However to test the WP/Alt belt it needs to be 84-99 lbs at the "A" arrow photo in the owners manual. The guage starts at 100. Close enough probably but that doesn't solve getting the guage in the right position. Impossible, at least with this belt and location. I need a fish scale that is accurate at 6lbs that I can simply hook the belt and pull down. Anyone else have a better idea on the tension needed and how. I am almost at the end of adjustment with the alt and it seems if we measure distance from the end of adjustment to the nut will simplify for many. All we need is someone with an engine out to measure this distance when the belt is spec. Any takers? Philip
