Would you believe there was nearly a 348 GTO? The fellow who sold me my 328 actually saw the plans and converted a 348 to what the GTO would have looked like! I'll post photos later, in a new thread.

It was an upper trim level of a lesser model Tempest/Le Mans. It was the brainchild of John Z. Delorean (yes, the same guy) who was head of Pontiac in the mid-sixties. He was a huge Ferrari fan and was trying to add some flair and European styling and class to the brand (and basically co-opted the name from Ferrari). Which he did, but the brand quickly became usurped by momma and daddy redneck instead of the upscale suburbanites that he was aiming for.

And the downward spiral has continued ever since!

Thanks everyone for the history lesson!

I sat in the Holden GTO.....400HP and a six speed......but they were not trying very hard to sell it to me, and the wheelbase looked a little short to my eye.......

We'll see what the new platform brings......maybe Mallett can do something with it........

As far as the originals go:
Unless you are talking about drag racing then you are probably way off. The Pontiac GTO was never really known to have any race history. It was too big for Trans Am and I am only aware of only one being raced in a lower echelon NASCAR race.

Now the newer incarnation (the Holden Monaro) raced in Grand-Am (GT) class and did quite well.

DeLorean was a class act...too classy for GM. He was a true visionary.

They can't give them away. I hear you can walk out the door with a new one for the upper-mid 20's. For 400HP, rear wheel drive and pretty decent handling that's not bad for a new car.

    That's why I had a PPI on my 328 - wanted to confirm it wasn't a Bimmer. ;)

Not sure engine displacement designations could be trademarked. I think the GTO trademark is a different issue. Although Olds used 442 a lot like a trademark.

The problem with GM is it destroys the value of its trademarks by sticking them on its cars. Let's see, Aztek, Catera, Monte Carlo, Chevette, Cutlass, Citation, Seville, Vega, GTO... I guess at some point you have to come out with a product that elevates those trademarks instead of dragging them through the mud.

No, it's not a Zagato. But I'm having trouble opening the full-size images in his email, so he's going to have to re-send them. Hopefully I'll be able to post them tomorrow.

But "GTO" is still live for GM.

Filing doesn't give you the trademark, use does - registration gives a more secure record of use though and creates a presumption in the registrant's favor.

Last time I looked Drag Racing was Racing and as the Car and Driver Test Showed the Pon Pon left the Ferrari GTO far behind in that contest. One of Brock's finest moments...

In order to use the trademark symbol, the mark must be registered, hence the symbol. The government web site listing all of the trademarks listed the Pontiac GTO mark as abandoned as of 2004, now the site may have out of date info, but that's all I was refering to. Simply using a trademark doesn't give you any legal protection from someone else using the same mark. Once filed and recognized the mark becomes yours.

It's the other way around though - it's the use of the mark that creates the legal protection, not the registration. Registration gives increased statutory protection and more remedies, but it does not create the basic common law trademark rights.

To clarify, you can use ™ right away without any registration. It just puts others on notice that you claim it as a mark (and usually, that you intend to register at some point... but not always). Once registered with the government, you can use the ® mark.

Lastly, their lawyer probably advised them to let Pontiac GTO die, because having GTO just by itself is far more useful against potential infringers.

Drag racing IS definately racing.........man, I'm gonna have to go out and lay some Goodyear stripes down over the weekend, just for Old Time's sake.......stand by with bail money in case the Texas City P.D. has lost it's sense of humor....;)

Is anyone listening? Is this thing ON??????

The Pontiac GTO will return on the new Camaro platform....Instead of them reusing the Firebird nameplate.......so I guess they are slow getting the registration money downtown...

The Holden GTO will be an orphan after the end of this model year, or next......as I understand it.
