I just posted some questions in the Technical Q&A section regarding this. As we have a wealth of Boxer information here, any of you guys with suggestions or advise please post in that thread. Thanks, John
Anyone,,,,,? With any information on changing the drop gear (transfer gear)bearings??? Any help would be appriciated. Thanks, John
john, you need to call dick fritz @amerispec to ask the tech question. for the parts, call wade at foreign cars italia and see if he can reference the parts he sold me or jeff carriker (the mechanic) for my car. it was a much more robust looking assembly than the one they pulled out of my car.
john, one more note on the clutch assembly. it was an ap system and the pressure plate housing was billet instead of stamped steel like the original...i think it even cost less than the ferrari labeled part!
Sorry John, Explain what the problem is and we can help. Changing the bearings for the drop/transfer gears isnt hard. What's the problem with the car?
Okay Peter, will do when I get back home. Still about 2 weeks yet. The present clutch is the Aluminum billet pressure plate AP unit. And hey, bring your coveralls; You get to help! Newman, It's a bearing noise in the gear train. With engine running, everything warmed up, trans in neutral, and clutch out, there's a little intermittent tingling, whirring noise (How do you explain a bearing noise?) from the Lower Transfer Gear case area. When you push the clutch in, the noise goes away as the gear train stops turning, and as such, should probably eliminate the throw-out bearing. While driving with revs at about 3000 RPM, with neutral throttle, the noise is a good deal louder and easily heard from inside the car. I realize it could be a trans-axle bearing (Hope Not) telegraphing back to the drop gear area as well, but for now am suspecting the lower drop gear bearing. And yes, the transmission is full of oil. That bearing has a ring nut on it to hold things, so I'm also wondering if it's maybe just come loose, And if its to be tightened to a specific per-load torque at installation? Thanks, John
oh john, w/ respect to the "whine" sound...mine had that too. dick fritz will tell you the complete remedy. if you like , we can make that call together as he is very familiar w/ helping me. pcb
Once you have it apart finding a bad bearing wont be a problem. If its the lower bearing then its an easy and inexpensive fix. If it the idler then things get worse. The gears are a matched set so you can imagine the cost and level of difficulty for locating them. Mark the gears so they go back together the same rather than the idler in backwards or it will make a noise, a rattle at idle. If the car has made the noise from day one of your ownership you could have a gear in backwards from a previous repair. Its not a big job but if you find nothing then deeper we go.
Okay Peter, That sounds like a winner. Do you remember the cause of the whine in yours? And thanks for volunteering your help
Newman, I noticed the noise after a couple months of ownership. Previous to that I was just so darn excited even having it in my garage, and still getting used to all the different noises these things make, that I might not have noticed. At that point I ran it down to Gary Bobileff's for a listen. He agreed it might be a transfer gear bearing, but the noise was rather nebulas at the time, so he suggested that I just listen for it while driving the car, and if it got worse we'd dig into it. So now, almost two years later, it sounds like it getting worse,,,,, or is it just that I think it's getting worse?? I mean Two years and 3000 miles with no major disasters! Is that even possible Naw, it's getting worse, and it's time to fix it! Thanks for your help, John
My car makes the same noise as you described, they used to overfill the gearbox on 365BB for oil starvation issues and when I first checked my trans oil I found it was overfilled as well by almost a quart from the overfill plug, my car then made mose noise when I filled it to the proper level on the overfill plug, I overfilled it again and the trans noise became much less noticeable
Hi John, I did the clutch on my 308 and I would hazqard a guess that the same tools and parts are used on a Boxer because the transfer box bearings are the same on Mondial etc. You need one special tool only, a 3/4 drive socket, and you can make up a clutch plate alignment rod with dowell and boss tape. send me an E-MAIL to [email protected] and |I'll send photos and text. Is yours single 365 or double plate 512 type? Les
Thanks Jeff, I remember talking to you regarding the proper oil fill level. Also in the workshop manual there is an addendum stating to add one or two liters extra (forgotten which). My car had the lesser amount, so I added the extra some time ago, but it didn't make any difference in the noise. John
I posted this several months ago. I sourced a company in Detroit that rebuilds your driven discs with kevlar facings. I did the discs in my 512 BB in 2003 and had the inter-disc resurfaced, all for approx $550. The clutch is very smooth, will probably outlast me. Quality Clutch @ 313 277 1780 or qualityclutches.com
Thanks Boxerboy! I hadn't actually thought of rebuilding it. No problem with the kevlar wearing down the flywheel surface? Thanks for the post, I'll contact them. John
