I paused it and zoomed in on it for a good look a couple of years ago.
The ad claimed that they could PROVE it was one of the Magnum cars. I wish I had gone to see and photograph the car, along with their proof, it was only a 25 minute drive.
According to the story I heard, which may or may not be true, the Magnum 308s were auctioned off for charity at the end of each season. Larry Manetti (Rick in the show) usually bought one of them to drive around. Ferrari did not donate them, the studio purchased 3 each year for the show. At the end of the shooting season, they were really beat up and barely running. The poor soul who bought the car usually had some major service to get them back on the road. Most, if not all of them, are not in Hawaii anymore. I did hear about the one in Colorado and I also heard of a couple around the LA area. Surprisingly, I have never seen one advertised for sale. Supposedly, Larry Manetti still has one of the cars. It is true that Tom Selleck was way to tall for the cars. So the story goes, it was a running gag in the show to have him shoehorn himself into the cars at some point in the show. He could drive the car, but not with the top on as he would hit is head. I will admit without shame, it was what go me worshipping at the altar of Enzo. My life has not been the same since.
Welcome Harold, thanks for that post! I had some kids in San Francisco holler "Hey, Magnum!" once.... And that was in a BLUE 308GTB....LOL!
My wife was in the car once when I was in the store and some guy asked her where Magnum was, but the funniest one came from a kid (18-20yrs.old) at a ricer car cruise who yelled from across the parking lot "Hey Bigguns! Where's Magnum?" I always assumed he meant "Higgins", but who knows.
Someone posted a picture of that car. I remember thinking I couldn't be one of the show cars for some reason.
I, for one, am pretty sick of the whole "Magnum" thing. I always wanted a 308 and bought one. I love the car, but.... And it's white a that. I suppose the Delorean guys and the TR guys are about done with it too. It doesn't help I have a big 'ol mustache either...
if memory servers, one of the Magnum cars is sitting on a Universal Studios lot in L.A. Saw it on a tour last year.
That one is for sure not one of the cars. It's a Euro model and judging from the way the back is raised up it doesn't even have an engine in it.
