I've got one on my Uk Qv, maybe its on European cars for our lovely rainy weather?

 

Mine isn't sealed that way. Kind of a 3/4 circle covering the top. Think mine is designed to stop water coming in from the bonnet above.

 

I have them on my USA QV. I assume they help keep moisture out as well as dirt. Probably a good idea. They pop up on E-Bay pretty often, so it shouldn't be hard to find them.

 

It's a water seal as the vents let rain in.....

ONe on each distributor, and there are two similar ones on the coils also......

You know me, I get caught out in rain, snow...all that jazz........one of my cars has been missing the coil covers the whole time...

Only when you see an original complete car do you realize they are missing! LOL!

 

Who would get there Ferrari Wet.....

Sounds like some of you guys wash your car or even worse, leave your cars out in the rain!

You know these things might shrink!

 

Water has never touched either of my Ferraris. I only use cans of compressed Italian air (packaged inside of the factory gates in Maranello) to blow the dust off the cars. I use the same cans to fill the tires as needed.

 

Now there is a guy who knows how to care for his cars

 

These are NOT used on the GT4's as the engine lid is solid metal (the single, central grille is far away from the rear bank distributor). The 308 GTB/GTS used these as there was the grille directly over the distributors and so, these covers would keep the water out of the caps.

 

I now have a pair of these available if anyone wants them, not sure what they are worth, pm me if interested, also I will shortly be putting them on Ferrariads.com

 

The mechanic currently working on both my GT4 and a US spec 308 remarked that these covers were only fitted to US 308's to keep moisture out.

His explanation: US customers are more demanding that European customers. A good wash with the high pressure hose could get the ignition components wet and could therefore cause hard or no starting. If this were to happen to a Euro customer, he'd blame himself. A US customer would tend to blame that stupid Euro car and go on to purchase another brand next time

That's right. Those Europeans can learn a lot from us...

FWIW, my 328 doesn't have them, and my engine bay is very original.

I believe that the covers were only on the 308 GTB/GTS's

Bottom line, to get back to the original question: No, the covers are not important. Just make sure that you don't aim the pressure hose directly at the engine bay.

I've driven my GT4 through some of the worst weather, rain, snow, soaking wet roads, and the ignition hasn't missed a beat, despite the lack of covers over the ignition parts.

What's wrong with washing the dirt off with a quick blast of Dihydrogen Monoxide every , say, 2-3 yrs? Cant see a car rusting out from that, can ya? I mean, the inside's painted.....
