Hi Is there a difference between the US & CAN bumpers? Before I bought my 348 I shopped in the US and where fair pricing tell I had to change the bumpers to Can standers for a price of 12,000 painted. I have my engine out and cleaning the rear bumper and comparing them to pictures on FC don't see the difference. Any info. thanks.
HI MARCO........there is a difference(no matter how small).....been thru this Canadian crap as I lived in Oakville for 5 years...brought my car in from US......it is rediculous.....Canada Customs(go to CA government website and download pdf file that governs importation of cars into the country) wants receipts for CA approved bumper.....they even made me buy thru an authorized dealer and the dealer had to install(BIG BUCKS).....there may be a loop hole depending on the age of the car but don't count on it........I think this is all politics to protect the dealers rather than to make it easy for Canadian citizens to puchase in US. You know what? I wanna see the inside of the bumpers on the euro cars, that way we can compare the difference. I'm guessing that the only difference is the piece of "impact" foam that they put between the bumper and the frame? That and the euro bumpers have no side marker lights. Other than those, I'm currious to know IF there is that big of a difference, and I'm guessing there isn't.
Looking in the Parts Book, there are five different front bumpers listed and five different rear bumpers listed. Of course it doesn't say what the differences are between them. There is a separate part number strictly for the Canadian market for each bumper. Some of the framework pieces are also unique for Canada.
Isn't the Canadian time limit just 15 years? If so then 1992 production (1993 model year) and earlier 348's should be in the clear, I'd think.
Canada Customs say the test is to roll the car at 8 km into a wall if the bumper does not crack it pass and also seat belt change and daytime running light. I think the bumper is a scam they look identically same. I read some were it has to do with the weight.
Hope you have better luck than I did.......it is a scam.....but IMO Canada Customs are jerks and they made my life hell on this bumper issue......running lights and seat belts also.....they will not take your word on anything....has to be a dealer invoice for all work and dealer has to notorize a staement saying it complies. Last time(1 year ago) all 348's had to comply and was on their compliance list, but as I said you can go to the government website and documents are available.
I have the guts and back-side of a US front bumper hanging in my shop from an accident if anyone wants jpeg's, pm me with email address. 25k for a simple repair/repaint. Yikes! Jeff Pintler 89 348tb, 86tr
