Start in on the training right away, and definitely socialize her. Great Danes are typically loyal, loving dogs, and nurture is the most common factor in how any dog turns out. And invest in a couple quality dog beds--it'll get crowded if they like to snuggle:)

If I ever get a dog, have not due to severe allergies, it will be a great dane; I have been convinced.

That Great Dane is too cute. I have been debating on getting my St.Bernard a buddy but he is such a handfull I haven't done it yet. I was thinking something more along the lines of a french bulldog or jack russell to give him something with energy to play with but those great danes are beautiful. How are they getting along? I can see them at my house sprawled out on the couch leaving me no place to sit!

The St. Bernard (Yogi), at almost 7 years old, is in his "twilight" years, and of course, the Great Dane (Clara) is a pup. Clara has all of the energy in the world, and loves to play. Yogi does too, but not quite as much. So when she wants to play, and Yogi wants to rest, she will not leave him alone. Also, she is teething right now, and nips at everything, including Yogi. We really have to watch them when they are out together. You turn your head, and the next thing you know, she has a mouthful of Yogi's fur! Overall, I think he likes the company, and he likes someone to play with - he probably wishes she had an "off" switch!

Yogi has never been allowed on the couch, but Clara is taking the liberty, and doesn't leave me a whole lot of room anymore. Time to train her that the couch is off limits!

How old is your St. Bernard? How much does he weigh?

Mine is pretty laid back. He is quite well behaved, and doesn't really do anything that he's not supposed to. Very gentle. He has always had a lot of toys to chew on, so he has never chewed on anything but his toys.

In what way is yours a handful?

Mine is 4 now and we have a 3 year old and a 1 year old so he is like having another BIG kid! He is pretty well behaved and the most gentle dog ever but he still is a lot of up keep as far as the area anywhere near his water/food bowl, he needs brushed constantly and every once in a while he will grab someones lunch off the table even when he knows he is not supposed to be table surfing! Sometimes he decides to take a flying leap right in the middle of our bed and then acts like dead weight and won't budge when I try to push him out. They are great dogs but man they are alot of work! Bentley is 175lbs now.

Hahahaha... at first glance that's what I thought as well. I figured it was to pin the ears back though.

Great looking dogs. I LOVE big dogs, they're so snuggly! :D

Every week, we take the stints off of her ears to see if they are staying up. She is very close now..............one more week should do it. I look forward to when the stints are off permanently.

Have you ever looked at Savannah cats? They're the Newf or St. Bernard of the cat world...HUGE! They're expensive, but very cool.
