What is the acceptable cash price to offer? Im guessing 5% off whatever you can negotiate before telling the salesman you are paying in cash...

It totally depends on what you're buying, if they're swayed by cash at all, if the item is in demand. there isn't a set formula for cash deals. In some cases cash won't even get you a beteer deal.

I've made cash deals for used cars that saved me a pretty penny but I might have had the same deal if I financed or paid by cheque, who knows.

    Whatcha buyin'?

have a few things in mind (99-00 yellow 360 coupe, 2004 gallardo, ~95 diablo)

I thought cash would be more appreciated as the risk to default is zero...

True, but depending on the time of the month.....kind-a-like women.....the dealer may need to push cars to make his monthly and quarterly quota. Sometimes cash speaks, sometimes not.

I found that cash offers are not what they use to be now that nearly anyone can get a loan regardless of their history.

    Q. What’s better? Leasing or buying, or cash?
    A. No simple answer, especially on high dollar purchases. Cash: ok, but it warrants NO discounts for the purchase ... cash has no advantage. Leases & Loans turn into immediate cash, so at the end of the day it's cash anyhow. At most dealerships, offering cash lessens profits, don't do the old "how much if I pay cash" routine, that actually works to your disadvantage.

This matches my experience. Unless you have bad credit and your loan falls through, it's all the same.

I think a, "I have the funds available right now if we can agree on a price" would go a long way. Especially if it's a clean deal and no trade etc.

i'd be suprised they don't think it is some sort of IRS sting. why anyone would have that amount of cash laying around "legally" is beyond me.

????? I'll bet some use their home equity lines of credit to purchase large items like a Ferrari and then move investment funds around to cover it.

If there is a will...there is a way.

I assumed he meant wiring money from his account to the dealer - i.e., moving money directly from your personal account instead of getting a check from a lender and signing that over to the dealer.

Cash has no advantage except in a private party sale, and maybe not even then. It's frustrating when trying to deal on a car when you have sales price and financing rate in play. You have to know what your dealing with. With an older used car on a lot, cash holds no real advantage I would think, anymore.

Agreed. If you are talking about green cash (not a cashiers check or something along those lines). It is a pain to deal with the bank when you go in with a large amount, filling out paperwork as to where it came from... which will inevitably lead back to you so the IRS may come asking questions about it to both the receiver of the cash and you.

Yes I meant a cashiers check for a dealership or a nice sized knot for a private party sale.. I think I get the idea now though

Cash will get you a better price on a small item. (Cash Sale = No Receipt), but I don't think it will on a big ticket item.

I think cash deals on cars were important not too many years ago. Dealers used to "work with" banks to get customers financing. Now so many dealers do thier own financing I don't think it matters as much.

I don't know of any franchised dealerships that tote-the-note. Bad business.

When someone says "how much if I pay cash", expect the same price you already agreed on. Someone else here already touched on it; "at the end of the day, it's all cash to the dealership".

Defaults don't matter, as they are only on the hook for the dealers portion of the finance reserve, and not the full amount of the car. Most dealers are only on the hook for 90 days, so even that isn't a huge concern.
