The Ferrari Daytona has had several different headlight treatments. The first couple of cars had a 275 GTB style headlight arrangement. A 4 headlight design followed under a plexi-glass panel that stretched across the nose of the car. This treatment did not meet USA federal standards introduced in 1968. To be able to market the Daytona in the North American market a new style pop-up 4 headlight design was introduced. An earlier exposed fixed 4 headlight design did not see regular production. As a compromise with the pop-up headlights the nose of the car was given a silver brushed aluminum look to mimic the plexi nose of the earlier Euro cars. The 1971 Ferrari Daytona Spyder ordered and built in only ten weeks for Dr. Bruce Sand had this silver nose feature. What was the period of production for the 'silver nose' treatment? By February? 1972 it seems the silver band was replaced by body color pop-up headlights. Thanks

It stopped way before then. By 145xx it had already stopped.

It's get tricky determining the last car with the silver stripe across the nose because most cars that get repainted loose the silver stripe in the process. And it's getting more difficult to find original paint cars. But, there are several original paint cars in the 145xx VIN range that do not have the silver stripe.

Paul's car (daytona registry owner), 14233, has the silver stripe. His car is close to production on mine, which would make it around April 1971.

Thanks to the two Steves for their replies. The silver nose seemed more common back when the cars were new. It appears to have been a running change made during 1971 whereby the paint process was simplified.

And before Ferrari changed the headlight buckets from the square lower edge to the radiused lower edge head bucket for ease of alignment. So, if you see a Daytona with a silver stripe with a radiused headlight bucket, you know there is a story to be told....

Very subtle about the headlight bucket!
I notice 13945 had the plexi nose and an earlier Euro car 13255 had pop-up headlights. Did production overlap between the two styles of headlight treatment? The last plexi car was what number; very low 14,000 serial number? Thanks

Some crash damage cars were changed from plexi to popup and vice versa. Also silver bands were added. There was a silver car with a black band around early enough (1971 or 2) to make me think that could be factory. That car had the side grooves in black also, as did my car (14729)

Hi John do you remember the month your car was built? December 1971? The white Spyder offered recently had the side grooves painted red. Your car did not have the silver nose when new, right? Thanks

Painted "side grooves" could be ordered from the factory that way. Heck, you could special order any paint you wanted still back then. Some owners have added them after the fact as well.

Plexiglass cars that were imported into the USA early on usually were modified to pop-up headlights (for DOT compliance), 12851, the only Plexiglass Spyder, suffered this fate as well. (It was restored back to its original plexiglass configuration.) Crash damaged cars were sometimes updated to pop-up headlights as well. The Plexiglass cars leave a lot be desired after dark. That said, I own a Plexiglass Coupe and really like the way they look. Not to mention it runs rings around my USA Daytonas.

To the best of my knowledge, the silver nose was painted by Perfect Reflection in Hayward CA for it's old owner Kevin Romak, a good friend of mine.

Tom, thats interesting. Do you (or Kevin) know if the silver stripe was there before Brian painted it?

So - how's retirement treating you? You have lots of free time now, right? :)

That is curious about 14233 not having the nose painted silver previously. Tom a later number Spyder 14383 whose tool kit and box you shared with us in great detail has the silver painted nose feature. Was the silver paint merely applied in a random manner? One of the early Prancing Horse issues prior to issue #45 featured a Daytona with the silver painted panel on the front cover. All the early USA cars seemed to be painted that way...

Who said Paul's car has/had original paint? The nose was red when Romak bought it from Bruce Trennery and he resprayed it, for what ever reason. Just making a statement. That's it. No serial number consideration made or implied.

Tom do you remember another red 1971 Daytona coupe with the silver paint on the nose? It had California lic 'SJE' back then. The owner I think was a friend of Chuck Queener.

My car, which I still have, was built in November 1971. It was Silver new, and was repainted all silver (no black grooves) in 1974 due to being left outside overnight with a car cover on that did not breath wery well. It fogged up the paint.

Don’t have info on the whole Silver thing but…..

To date, my discussions with various knowledgeable folks,
along with matching photos to s/n research showed that s/n 14115 maybe
the last LHD Fixed Headlight car produced, have not found evidence otherwise.

It is also my understanding that until all the
Fixed Headlight parts were used that, for a time,
both Fixed and Retractable headlights were made, depending on intended market.

Below is what I am currently going with, this is not written in stone and if evidence is available proving otherwise please provide it. Happy to change.

    s/n 14111 ??????????
s/n 14113 LHD Retractable Euro car (Daytona registry)
s/n 14115 LHD Fixed Headlight Euro car, Originally imported to US (I own it)
    s/n 14117 RHD Retractable British
s/n 14119 RHD Retractable British (Daytona registry & SCM Web site)

Kevan it seems you have a milestone Daytona of sorts; 14115 being the last plexi nose LHD car built. Thank you for the research shared here!

It's Prancing Horse Issue 33 that has the article, with pictures, including the cover shot, of an early USA Coupe with silver painted nose. By the way, if you look at the article, check out the hood strut label, that's the other type of Cosso & Corte hood strut label, not the silk screened one that (some) Judges seem to think came on all Daytonas.

Yes, for a period of time, Ferrari made both Plexiglass covered fixed headlights and pop-up headlights depending on the market. USA cars started receiving the pop-up headlights while the Plexiglass cars were still being made. The first generation of pop-up headlight buckets had square edges. The second generation, and more common, had radiused lower edges. This made it much easier to align the headlight buckets.

14383's car has been repainted in the nose. But, it did originally come with the silver stripe.

14115 may be the last Plexiglass headlamp covered car. It's certainly in the VIN range of when the Plexiglass cars stopped rolling out of the factory. In the world of Ferrari, however, you learn not say "never", "always", and for me, I add "first" and "last". Remember, just because a VIN may be later than another car does not mean it was built in that order. So, I'm not sure what "last" even means. Highest VIN? Or, "last" one actuall finished at the factory?

Heck, even in this day and age, incorrect information is still being printed on seemingly easy to verify facts. Most current books, magazines, etc. still list 9 alloy body LWB CA Spyders. To the best of my knowledge, based on information provided to me by people that have inspected the nine cars over the years, there are only seven. Two cars that are listed as Alloy cars are not and still wear their steel bodies.

    Steve
