I was talking with friends about famous athletes and wanted to know what you guys thought. During the height of their respective careers who do think was more popular world wide, Michael Jordan or Michael Schumacher? by popular i mean the number of people that have a working knowledge of who the person is and what they do.

Obviously there are a million different ways to frame this, just a simple curiosity survey is what i had in mind.

PS...I'm from Chicago, so it's hard for me to tell, the rats in this town still wear Jordan jerseys...and I don't think anyone that I know knows who Schumacher is (sad to say).

Worldwide I'd say Shumi. Who would really know who Jordan is(or care too much) outside of the US? There would be stats on this if you did a little digging.

Jordan. His clothes alone are marketed worldwide. Even if someone doesn't know what he does, I'm sure they'd see his name at some point.

Jordan, definitely - I remember reading some marketing reports that said Jordan was up there with Santa Claus and Ronald McDonald as far as recognizability.

I have been thinking for years now it's odd that Schumacher didn't brand himself more aggressively. He had a few clothing items and such but it wasn't prominent or well marketed.

That's a good question. I would say that MJ is more well-known because of Nike's marketing juggernaut. Nike is in or has been involved in every sport at some point, and they are pretty good at cross-marketing. MJ had the Olympic Dream Team as a world-wide stage at the height of his popularity, and basketball players have facial recognition that racers don't always enjoy. A friend of mine worked for the UN based out of Kenya in the early 90's, and once he was carrying around a Sports Illustrated featuring MJ on the cover. He said kids kept running up to him, pointing at the mag and yelling "Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan." That's pretty well-known in my book.

I bet there is more NBA fans in the world compared to F1 so I'm guessing M. Jordan to be a bit more popular than M. Schumacher.

More NBA Fans in the US, but F1 is a worldwide sport. Basketball and Nascar are more of a National Championship as opposed to a International Championship.

I'd think Schumacher would be more known worldwide, but I could be wrong as you guys said with the marketing of Jordan with Nike.

You would be very surprised. I've been told this by many people "there are two things that are pronounced the same in every country: Coca-cola and Michael Jordan"

If you say the names, I would think Schumi would be more recognized.

If you showed pictures of them, I would say its Jordan.

A crude measurement for popularity might be who's got the greater net worth and or who earns more in their retirement?

I've read reports claiming that Jordan chooses not to appear in many ads anymore. I don't think his marketability is any lower, but he seems to be choosing to maintain a lower profile (thus skewing your theory). The same may be true of Schumi, I just haven't read about him much.

Jordan. My relatives in Iran knew only two NBA players when I visited them in the mid-90s. Shaq and Jordan. I don't think they even got the bball games televised there, LOL! You'd be very surprised at how well known Jordan is.
