given that i will living at 9500ft in summit county, what would be the best choice for a sports car, a 360-430 coupe or a spider? I know that from nov.thru april the car will be on a battery charger in the warmth of a heated garage. But what about the spring, summer and fall? I general like spiders better for my sports cars but also recognize that coupes are lighter, tighter with slightly better feel and performance....not to mention cheaper. But will the high countries weather we too cool to full enjoy the spider??? I know the nights can get cold and often the top will have to go up...Here on the east coast, warm summer evenings are the rule and are great for spiders...actually some of summer days are too hot and muggy to enjoy a spider....your opinions????

I've spent a lot of times in the mountains, so I know how quickly a nice day can turn into a full out rain storm in the summer.

As far as I'm concerned though, a spider is a must!!!!

Ever seen the Top Gear Episode where Clarkson is racing around their test track in a 430 Spider, while a Ferrari test driver is ahead of him in the Coupe, trying to pull away? He figured it wouldn't be difficult for the coupe to pull away, put Clarkson kept hot on his tail. The Spider is slower than the coupe--but not enough to notice. ;) They are more expensive...but it's a Ferrari we're talking, right? :p

Believe me, the summer days are not cold. I've hiked and biked in shorts and t-shirts on the mountains many times (a sweatshirt doesn't hurt to keep around though...) As for night time and/or sunset... keep the heater on, and go fast enough that the cold doesn't have time to settle in your car!!

I wouldn't hesitate to get the spider. It's the stuff dreams are made of right there-- flying through the gorgeous mountains on a summer day with the top down, taking in all the sights and listening to that Ferrari engine scream.

    I'm jealous I can't do it ;)

Good luck on your desicion. :)

You have other cars for when the roads are tricky, use this one for the good ol' days (and use it often!)

Spider, but park it in Denver. I lived in Summit County, and it snowed from October to April. Then it's the mud season from April till June. So you can drive it easily for only a few months out of the year. I think you could drive it more if you parked it down the hill.

There is an F owner that lives in Aspen, PhilnotHill. He might have a better answer because he keeps his in Aspen. Try him.

In fact it is snowing in Summit county today. (April 9th)

The ONLY time a coupe is better than a drop top, IMO, is if it's a dedicated track car.

If the heater and the top work, what's the worry?

I agree you should be looking for a spyder. Just imagine the unobstructed views while ripping through the canyons! (professional driver on closed course. Do not attempt...) :)

It's not THAT cold, and that's what jackets are for.
Phil's got a sweet 360 spyder in Aspen. He should be chiming in soon...

Look forward to seeing you around. -m

    Spider.
When it's sunny you can put the top down at 30 degrees F with the heater on.

The smells and the sounds are not to be beat with the top down. Plus, people love to watch the top go up and down. A show in itself.

When F1 starts driving with the top up, I'll consider switching to a coupe.

I don't put the top up or down when its below freezing. I wait until it warms up in the garage.

    Hope this helps.
