None of the search options I have answer all my questions, so he goes---
    1. - How many speakers are there in a 98 355?
    2. - What are the exact location of each speaker?
    3. - What are the exact size of each speaker?
    4. - How do you access said speakers?

I am in the process of upgrading the stock stereo - NO bashing and telling me the sweet Ferrari sound should bo enough - I like my music!!
I am looking at doing a Alpine D100 flip out 6.5" screen, with Ipod hookup and the Alpine Blackbird Nav system with the docking cradle. My technician suggested mounting the cradle behind the passenger seat on the rear deck so I can easily remove it and transfer it from car to car. After I do this I would like to upgrade the stock speakers also, but didn't want to start remving panels, etc if there is a easy way to get to the speakers.

OK - I finally dug out the owners manual. Looks like there are 4 speakers total. 2 in each door and 2 on the dash outside of the heater vents -

Anyone know the size and how to truly access them..

In keeping with true Ferrari fashion...to access the door speakers you'll need to surgically remove the door skin from the outside to gain access to the back of the speaker. At that point you'll need a $4000 tool to loosen the special lockdown nuts that were custom made by a locksmith in a small village outside of Maranello. At that point you can replace the $15 speaker :)

I'm learning how to work on Ferrari's faster than I had hoped!

Dang! The only thing I had to do was remove the door liner on the interior of the door. There are only four speakers in the car and if you plan on hearing them with the X-OST on a running car plan on playing the radio very loud. Another option is an I-pod and some small in ear headphones.

There has got to be a way around that. So if I take the inside door panel off, I can't access the stereo speaker?? I can assure you one way or another I will change those speakers w/o using a special tool..:D just need to know what size they are so I can get my others ordered...

Ok, I know the stereo is not as important as the wonderful sound of the exhaust as you exceed 5000rpm. However, I like my music and the stock set up is just not good. I have the factory Sony system with CD Changer and my question is, can a new set of speakers do the trick or do I need to change the system?

I want to keep the car appearance as stock as possible. Thus no new speaker holes, mounts or etc. Finally, when and if I do sell the car, I plan to include the original stereo.

If I move to a new system, I am leaning towards Alpine (Per 285Ferrari) or Pioneer http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/product/details/0,,2076_310069882_338834014,00.html
    .

Thoughts and suggestions would be great.

That head unit looks nice don. I have not yet done my system--One reason is the Concours deal---don't want to have to deduct any more points than need by. After I win a nice award I will propably change it up..

We're thinking the same way. That is why I am leaning to just do the speakers and keep them hidden. We have a Coucours in LV in mid-May and Concorso Italiano in August. I am even afraid to change the dead pedal from that hunk of metal to some nice milled aluminum :).

Too right on the stereo. Did anyone end up changing their speakers and what did they change them for? Was it a royal pain?

I have a Blackbird I'll sell you for cheap. I bought it to mount on the windshield, but was informed that its illegal in CA to put it there.

I've changed out the speakers on my 1999 355 GTS and can't imagine the '98 being much different. The speakers in the door are 6.5" 2-way (I went with Iridium DLS 6.2) and the two in the dash are merely tweeters. All speakers are easily accessible from the cabin without special tools, and total labor at the shop doing the work was only a few hours. Hope this helps.

For my 355 I initially went for Infinity Kappa 62.7i, which are 2way 6.5 inch speakers.

When I removed my dash I re-thought the plan and obtained the Infinity Kappa 65.7cs which are two piece component speakers.

The door speakers are 165mm and fit the doors perfectly. (no space for anything larger without mods) You can see from the pictures, with the dash removed, I placed the crossover right in the corner behind the dash. The tweeters fit in the same location as the factory placement, no mods required.

I would be scared to death to take my dash apart like that. Can the tweeters be replaced w/o removing the dash??

The way Terry has done his you have to remove side air vents, pass. air bag, and maybe inst. pod......it's not that hard.....I'm just wondering if tweeters interfere with air vent install......the Ferrari tweeters are tiny compared to his......Terry can you add some comments????

All you need to remove for the tweeters are the air vent grilles at each corner of the dash.

Next question then, how do the vents come out? Don't want to break anything...

I expect the installation can be done with just the vents removed. The removal of the old Ferrari speakers is easy (clips in place) and the installation of the new ones is one screw with locknut due to no vibration with hi frequency tweeters.. You may have difficulty finding a place for the crossovers but not impossible.

The new tweeters fit fine and do not interfere with the air vents. I have attached a picture of the finished job which shows no changes to the doors, dash or vents.
