Not entirely true. There was a guy busted locally for hiring people to steal specific goods from local stores (power drills, tools, etc) so he could give the theives half the price ebay was selling them for, and then sell them on ebay for full price. The guy made rediculous cash. My brother-in-law (federal agent) had a stake out on this guy for months prior to busting him.
Well done! He probably would have renaged on the deal, or offered less when it came to handing over the money anyway. So not only have you saved someone else from buying a car with a "haircut", but you probably haven't lost as much as you think.
Ebay people can be really hit and miss sometimes. Most of the time they are fine. A few months ago I sold an item on ebay. I heard back from the buyer 2 months later to say it was packed improperly. Through further conversations with the guy, he stated he had been in the process of moving, and you want a refund? Who are these people trying to kid.
I can't believe that this idiot has not been busted yet. If one were to do this sort of thing, why on earth would you approach 3rd parties to ask them to go along with your crime. Just another stupid crook.
I came upon an active ATM screen today in The Med Center.......my card wouldn't go in..... I realized it was waiting on another transaction...in Spanish... I chased the old guy down and gave him back his card....... Without even checking 'available balance'! LOL!
Ditto. May be your word vs his, but it would put doubt in the mind of the police. Oh, you could also report him his State Attorney's Office. Nice job man but sorry to hear your car is gone. Good luck with the boat.
Not gone yet..... Im not sure if winning bidder is going to complete. I cant belive the deal it was also.. $30k for an 85 QV... I was taking a $8k hit in it. Guess Illhave to store it after all if something doesnt happen tomorrow. At least by the time i get it out prices will be in the high $40's hopefully. Just as well. I was having second thoughts anyhow.
But Dave, I dont get it....dont you have a reserve price ANY buyer must meet? If someone doesnt hit the reserve, you're not obligated. And if one hits the reserve, well, this was your rock bottom minimum price you MUST be happy with, no??
Here is how it works... I set a reserve.. Someone bids and it hits the reserve, so they bought it. I lowered the reserve so the car would sell, (way below what its worth in my opinion) cause im leaving on Friday (moving) The winning bidder decided not to pay for the car by the deadline (his financing fell though among other things) So now.. since hes not going to pay.. the car will not sell. I was not happy selling the car at $30k... i was just sucking it up for a quick sale.
OK, I follow you. So, just to be 100% clear, do you still own it, and do you still want to sell it? Joe
yes.. an yes.. But probably wont happen. Im leaving friday. So the likelyhood of finding a buyer by friday and geting payment is rare.
Shucks Dave, Ya got a neat car, but I'm a nut looking for a 77. Otherwise the Friday deadline wouldnt be a problem. Are ya gonna just haul it with you wherever you're going?
Ive seen a few 77's out there when I was doing research... Good luck Cant take it with me unless it floats...moving out on a boat. I found some storeage its going it i guess.
Thanks! Good Luck with your move and all. Yeah, all of us owe you one for preventing that con man from doing that deal! Joe
Thanks for all the kind comments. Im officialy signing off here. The car had to go, so I rolled it into the deal I had on a 2003 Porsche 996tt. ( i consolidated my daily driver and the 308 into it. (tried to post a pic.. but wont let me) So it worked out well afterall. the 996 can sit outside every now and then, and I wont worry about it as much and it will blend in a little more. (911s are everywhere on the east coast and will be safe and the marina) http://photos.ebizautos.com/5276/1438538_19.jpg Ill come back and visit when we get settled in, and when I get another F-car. This board is a great place and glad i could be a part of it. If the car shows up.... tell the next owner how great a car it is.
great thread. good for you on holding your ground. when i had my GTB on Ebay, i had some weird emails about reporting the mileage. mine has the actual miles on the GA title, and i have a copy of the old title showing the mileage is correct. it boggles the mind that someone would admit to rolling an odometer. i would rather have a carb car that gets driven, than one that sits.
It really is a small world. I have been lurking on this forum for a few months as I am a perspective 308 owner. The proper authority to contact on odometer rollback issues is the NHTSA office of Odometer Fraud. I would be very interested in finding out more about this situation as I am one of the Special Agents in Charge of this unit. Odometer rollbacks are taken seriously and all of us at NHTSA are sworn federal law enforcement Special Agents with arrest authority. Most of us came from one of the other BIG agencies for a better quality of life and the fact that we are car guys. Any time something like this comes up in the classic car realm I am interested. Anonymous calls are fine at 202-493-0338.
