This is way too late for April fool's nonsense! Is this a member of the OFCC (Olde Farts Car Club) perhaps? :)
The only thing I can't condone is unsafe passing across a solid line, or where the pass clearly puts someone at risk, otherwise everyone is responsible or themselves. It's called free will and you can do whatever you choose, as long as you are prepared to deal with the consequences.

I recently heard of an Alfa event that used to occur out on the Eastern shore. They would go out to an amazing collection out there of some extremely rare cars. They invited some Ferrari guys to participate. During the drive out to the location, someone in a Ferrari thought things were going too slow, passed on a turn, ran the car collection's owner's son off the road. That was 14 years ago and the event has yet to be held again.

Just be careful when you do it!

You guys are being a little harsh on the guy, and I am guessing most of you haven't been on a "club drive" from the responses.

First, it sounds like he is talking about a public road tour, not a track event. I have been on lots of PCA club tours and just as he says, it is the unwritten (but spoken) rule that people on the tour do not pass each other once on the highway. This prevents the very dangerous situation where every idiot thinks that HE is faster than everyone else and has to be the car tucked in right behind the leader. When the group stops for gas or food or whatever, people can reorder how they like, but once underway, passing each other is strongly discouraged. It is funny watching everyone try to weasle their way up in the order whenever the group restarts.

The drives we do in the PCA are not cruises. There is some serious back road hauling of a$$ on tight, twisty roads. Knuckleheads trying to pass each other on the twisties is the last thing you want. Plus, some people are very competitive with respect to how close to the front they are. They all want to go as fast as possible, so are not going to want someone trying to slot in in front of them. Competitive driving on the street is a very bad thing. People see red and stop thinking like adults in that situation.

If you want to have a fast yet safe tour, this rule is mandatory from my experience.

    Boy racers need not apply.

I have driven and organized exotic tours (both club and dealer sponsored), and have never heard of such a rule. Our group tends to have people with highly different views on speed. We routinely have highway segments at the beginning of the drives specifically to allow people to sort themselves.

Perhaps the difference is that everyone has a printed map of the route on our drives, so there's no designated 'leader' position.

I think you lose a lot if you don't have people pass each other. The sound of 12 cylinders opening up IS music. It can be done safely (ie, not on curves, don't cross yellow lines, don't try to beat the oncoming traffic, etc). I personally welcome someone passing me just for the sight/sound. The important thing is that everyone should anticipate this, and leave ample room in front for the merge back in.

Our tours (frequently at least a day long, if not longer), generally have between 20 and 30 cars in them. Yes, there are speed differentials between drivers, but the leader asks everyone at the start of the tour to try to get in an order that is relative to the speed they want to drive, ie slow people in the back.

It sounds like our tours are a bit more formal than is being discussed. Driving the distances we do, having a tour leader allows for knowing where the best roads are and what they entail ahead of time. Our local leader goes and drives the roads probably a half dozen times before he ever brings the group there. It is actually a post/office in our local chapter, as I imagine it is for most clubs. Having a very experienced driver un front in a very capable car on roads that he has already scouted multiple times allows for much higher speeds and better controlled events. Every car has a family band radio to assist in communication and passing in difficult areas.

Maybe your groups are smaller or easier going. In ours, the people up front want to drive hard and it would get ugly if people kept trying to get in front of each other so they could drive a little faster.

How many mishaps has your club and dealer sponsored drives had? Once they happen, the level of attention given to reviewing the rules of the road due to mishaps might change club to club region to region.

Coming from the South, I have never heard of such a rule. Sounds like BS to me.
