As you are near Zurich, you should visit the nearby "Berner Oberland" (Highlands of Bern). There are many beatiful cols.
And if you want to rent a F-car, you can do it in Muensingen, near Bern.
    Look at this: www.sportgarageruch.ch
    I bought my 308 there....

i live in paris but im a swiss/american and grew up in switzerland.
from the two hotels you mention i would definetely choose the steigenberger.
its nice and situated on the lake (ask for a room with view to the lake).
but there are nicer hotels than that, what's your budget? how long do you stay in switzerland? how will you move around?

I really don't know the best routes but I know from expierence that almost any smaller road becomes a scenic route when you drive in direction of the Alps. Did a random three hour tour today starting in Zürich and enjoyed every minute. Don't take a hotel at the airport when you can enjoy one at the lake.

Have you been there yet? Hope you didn't clash into the Watch fairs in Basel & Geneva as this is a peak period to visit Switzerland & prices of hotels in major cities can be daunting with 5stars going CHF1000+ in Geneva & Zurich easily. Not to mention they are fully booked.

I would take their trains, very efficient, leaves on the exact minute almost hourly & they have all the maps, schedules all printed out. Buy a week long 1st or 2nd class ticket from the Zurich airport. The ticket covers some tram rides in certain zones of the cities. The trains also give you the pleasure to some of the most beautiful sceneries & you can leave the hassle of parking/petrol etc behind. Taxis are expensive. The trains take you up the mountains of Zurich, Lucerne (Mt Titlis) etc. while a train ride from Zurich to Geneva can cost you some 4hrs but it bypasses several cities along the way where you & your wife can visit.

I would recommend Zurich, Lucerne, Basel, Bern, Schaffhausen, Lausanne, Geneva & some other older cities, if you have the time & like skiing, go to the central Jungfrau mountains, St Moritz or even Lugano. The train journey passes some stunning views not possible by roads.

I'm an Asian from Singapore but been visiting Swiss often. In fact, I might be there in June to view one of the best private Ferrari collection in the region. Oh how I miss Swiss!

    Jon

Oh yes, forget the hotels by the airport or Bahnhorf (train stations) when there's some lakeviews. Many small cosy 3stars hotels operate in the cities as well with some offering good service & views.
